He originally started rapping as Sir Cartier, releasing a mixtape titled THC: THE HIGH CHRONICAL$ on November 5, 2011, that has since been deleted from the Internet, because it was absolute balls. He followed up with the mixtape Young Mi$fit on November 12, 2012. He changed his artist name to Playboi Carti in May 2013. As Playboi Carti, he came into prominence in 2015 with his song Broke Boi. Initially a part of the Atlanta-based Awful Records label, he also performed at the fashion events such as Yeezy Season 5, VFiles, and Raf Simons events, with artists such as Lil Uzi Vert and A$AP Rocky. In 2016, he was featured on A$AP Mob's debut studio album, Cozy Tapes: Vol. 1 Friends -, on the tracks London Town and Telephone Calls, which the latter was released as the second single from the album.
Carti's eponymous debut mixtape, Playboi Carti, which features guest appearances from Lil Uzi Vert, A$AP Rocky, and Leven Kali, was released on April 14, 2017. The self-titled release gained attention from various music publications, including XXL, Pitchfork, Spin, HotNewHipHop, and PopMatters. XXL noted the track Magnolia as a standout cut, whereas Pitchfork critic Briana Younger thought that the release "finds a cloudy and economical mood and stays there, but it's Carti's magnetic confidence that turns just enough into plenty." The mixtape sold 28,051 units in its opening week.
In accompaniment with the mixtape's release, Carti embarked on a tour, which featured him as an opening act for Gucci Mane and Dreezy.
At the end of 2017, Carti was featured on A$AP Mob's Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy, A$AP Ferg's Still Striving, and NAV's Perfect Timing. Carti was meanwhile working on his debut album, Die Lit, which would be released on May 11, 2018.
Die Lit was an album that received mixed reviews, but fans of Carti enjoyed the album. Metacritic rated the album 71/100 with a user score of 8.2/10. Die Lit includes notable tracks such as Shoota, Foreign, Choppa Won't Miss, Mileage, and Poke it Out. This album included features from artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj, Chief Keef, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Skepta, and Bryson Tiller.
Since the release of Die Lit, Playboi Carti has embarked on his own tour, while featuring on songs such as Uh Uh (feat. Playboi Carti) on Chief Keef's Mansion Musick and Get Dripped on Lil Yachty's Nuthin' 2 Prove.
However, soon after the release of Die Lit and his tour, Carti was seen discussing a new album, titled Whole Lotta Red . Over the course of the next few years, songs from Whole Lotta Red would get leaked, or played by Carti himself at select shows. On November 23, 2020, Carti announced that the album had been submitted to his label, along with posting several blurry photos. He would later announce several collaborations, with artists such as Kanye West and Future. DJ Akademiks would later announce that the album would release on Christmas day, and was executively produced by Kanye West.
Whole Lotta Red's fan reception was polarizing at the start, but the album was met with positive critical reception. Metacritic rated the album 75/100 with a user score of 7.4/10. The album would later increase in popularity among Carti fans and music enjoyers alike over time — highly due to several tracks going viral on TikTok — and began receiving high praise.
Playboi Carti has announced that his next project, Music, is dropping "ASAP."

Lean in my cup, gas in my blunt
Got some hoes who gon' fuck
I'm still pouring up
I can see in his face
Designer on my waist
Now you all in her face
That ho give me face
That ho give me favs
Fetti on Fetti on Fetti
I can't go in, I ain't ready
I can't go in, I ain't ready
I can't go in, I ain't ready
Fetti on Fetti on Fetti
I can't go in, I ain't ready
I can't go in, I ain't ready
Fetti on Fetti
I can't go in I ain't ready
I can't go in, I ain't ready
That drank on me heavy
I can't go in I ain't ready
I can't go in, I ain't ready
Them pills kicking heavy
I can't go in I ain't ready
I can't go in, I ain't ready
That 40 too heavy
I can't go in I ain't ready
I can't go in, I ain't ready
Just count up my fetti
So, yeah, so
Mr. Never Lacking
Bust a package, bills can get paid off of rappin'
Still I keep to trappin'
Used to hunnid sack it
Now I fuck a actress
Shit I'm just thinkin how it happened
Had to get explicit, had to make it listen
Moving out them pounds, niggas started snitchin'
Loading up them rounds, niggas started missin'
Move it out of town, and Tommy Cruise the mission
Converse with my addictions
Don't talk I just listen
5 drugs that I'm mixin'
Money only thing on my vision
Infatuated with them semis & 'matics
All of my niggas is thugs with some habits
Like Ring on TV, we been with the static
I fuck on this bitch and she say she from Athens
Opiated so I'm demonstrating my emotion less
Got some real niggas quoting this
Got yo main bitch hoein', shit
Lost a few things as of recent
Life is anything but decent
Who to re up on my teeth
Is the only time you catch me cheesin'
Shipping a pack and it's vacuum sealed
30 on 40, keep that concealed
Just bought a pint, I'm a crack the seal
Strap on my side like a Navy SEAL
Three in the morning, we trapping still
Matte black on rover, the bat mobile
Don't trust that nigga cause he gon squeal
Not buying shit if the pack not sealed
Im faded, I'm faded, off xannies I'm wasted
My bitches they nasty they suck it and taste it
I'm short on my patience, I'm serving my patient
I'm very impatient, little bitch come get naked
Pack coming in but I don't need to weigh it
Choppa?? I shoot once and you spraying
Can't come in my trap the front door is gated
My prices inflated, my plug name is David
Dripping thru the city got a little bitch in Babee'Os
Fucked me on the spot cause she heard me on the radio
3 bitches run to me, that's a perfect ratio
Don't wanna fuck the ho, I just want fellatio
Let her play with the nut, put it in her booty hole
Pop a couple pills and I beat it like a stereo
Stuffed cup, backwoods, riding 'round, merry-go
Cup need a oil change, Actavis I love to po'
Hit a stain, hogging lanes, gripping grain getting throwed
Leave you brains in the grain, you another John Doe
No holds barred when you see me I let it go
No mo' 'gars so we rolling up the fronto
No mo 'gars cause we rollin out the fronto
I'm in H-town, nigga, and I can never go
In Playboi Carti's song "Fetti", he is portraying his lifestyle where he's coming down from Houston and had some lean in his cup and gas in his blunt.
