The project started in 2004 with the organization's self described goal to "inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music". The creators of the project travelled around the world to places such as New Orleans, Moscow, Zimbabwe, Tibet and using a mobile recording studio, had local musicians perform the same song, interpreted into their own local style. The project's first single Stand by Me, began with a Santa Monica street performer named Robert Ridley, who they had perform the tune. They then travelled around the world and had more musicians add their versions.

Playing For Change Lyrics

De donde crece la palma
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmín encendido
Que busca en el monte amparo
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Cultivo una rosa blanca
En julio como en enero
Para el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace más que el mar
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
The lyrics to Playing For Change's Guantanamera are a beautiful expression of the artist's deep connection to their homeland and their desire to share the essence of their being through their verses. The first stanza, "Yo soy un hombre sincero, De donde crece la palma, Y antes de morirme quiero, Echar mis versos del alma, Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera," speaks of the artist's sincerity and authenticity. They are a man from the land where palms grow, and before they die, they want to share the verses that flow from their soul. The repetition of "Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera" emphasizes the song's connection to the land and the people who inhabit it.
The second stanza, "Mi verso es de un verde claro, Y de un carmín encendido, Mi verso es un ciervo herido, Que busca en el monte amparo, Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera," describes the artist's poetry as a clear green mixed with a fiery red, representing the passion and energy that flows through their words. Their poetry is like a wounded deer searching for sanctuary in the mountains. Again, the refrain of "Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera" highlights the artist's connection to their culture and land.
The third stanza, "Cultivo una rosa blanca, En julio como en enero, Para el amigo sincero, Que me da su mano franca, Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera," speaks of the artist cultivating a white rose in July and January for a sincere friend who offers an open hand. This stanza emphasizes the importance of friendship and the beauty of cultivating relationships.
The final stanza, "Con los pobres de la tierra, Quiero yo mi suerte echar, El arroyo de la sierra, Me complace más que el mar, Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera," expresses the artist's desire to be with the poor of the land and to share their luck. They find more joy in the streams of the mountains than in the vastness of the sea. This stanza reflects the importance of community and connection to the land and its people.

Dear Lisa,
I am so happy to read that your spirits have been lifted due to this song along with my small contribution. Just remember that you are never alone. Reach out to all your loved ones and friends. Suffering only lingers on when one decides to shut themselves away ´from the world´. Music is a wonderful remedy that does wonders, unfortunately, not a cure or the solution to snap out of a negative state of being.
You used two beautiful words in your message – “Kindness” and “hope”. It´s quite obvious for all to see in both of your messages what a wonderful person you are. Your heart full of gold and being in the right place.
Whenever we sense sadness for whatever reason it may be, we need to know and accept that the past is past and unfortunately cannot rewind time. We need the present to reflect and act upon our current dilemma and find that strength we had in life just before that sadness appeared upon us in order to fight our predicament. We then look at tomorrow as tomorrow is the FUTURE and for ever full of HOPE - your beautifully chosen word.
Tomorrow always starts the day with a clean slate. It bears no memory, negativity, pain or rejection of the past. Just pure beauty starting with the blissful morning air whilst always being reminded by the joyous singing birds of the beauty of life.
I am positive in thinking that tomorrow will be your day, Lisa. Grab it and embrace it with all your might. I send my best regards and wishes your way. You deserve only the best!
