Locking Up the Sun
Poets of the Fall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They're locking up the sun, the light of reason gone,
N' hope has been successfully undone
The question's burning on, where is it coming from,
No-one seems to know the monster born

It's a bad trip on a sinking ship, when no-one seems responsible
Scapegoat to rock the boat, yeah, we need someone expendable
Volunteers to face the fears, can we be sensible
And find a way to break the fall, find out the cure for all

Is there a hero somewhere, someone who appears and saves the day
Someone who holds out a hand and turns back time
Is there a hero somewhere, someone who will never walk away
Who doesn't turn a blind eye to a crime

They're locking up the sun, they have their chosen one,
You know this time they'll make him play along
They're taking to the arms, the fathers and their sons,
There's nowhere left to run and hide

It's a bad trip on a sinking ship, when no-one seems responsible
Scapegoat to rock the boat, yeah, we need someone expendable
Volunteers to face the fears, can we be sensible
And find a way to break the fall, find out the cure for all

Is there a hero somewhere, someone who appears and saves the day
Someone who holds out a hand and turns back time
Is there a hero somewhere, someone who will never walk away
Who doesn't turn a blind eye to a crime

And in the emptiness, there's a solution,
Just look within yourself for absolution

Overall Meaning

The song "Locking Up The Sun" by Poets of the Fall conveys a sense of hopelessness and fear towards a world where reason and hope have disappeared. The line "They're locking up the sun, the light of reason gone" suggests a dark and grim atmosphere where people are losing faith in their leaders and their ability to make the right decisions. The verse "No-one seems to know the monster born" emphasizes the sense of confusion and chaos that prevails in the world, where nobody seems to understand the source of the problems or how to tackle them.

The song also questions the idea of responsibility and accountability. The lines "when no-one seems responsible, scapegoat to rock the boat" reveal the tendency of people to shift blame onto others, and how this culture of blame creates a situation where nobody takes responsibility for their actions. The chorus "Is there a hero somewhere, someone who appears and saves the day" reflects the desire for a savior who can change the situation and make things better.

The song ends on an introspective note, where the solution to the problems lies within oneself. The line "Just look within yourself for absolution" suggests that one must take responsibility for their own actions and decisions, as the first step towards finding a solution. Overall, "Locking Up The Sun" highlights the need for responsibility, accountability, and self-reflection, to create a brighter future for all.

I love seeing people discuss the meaning behind POTF's music. It's true poetry - there is never one TRUE meaning to a song. It's all about the person and what they get out of it and how they can relate to it. It's so great seeing so many different people's thoughts. POTF truly has an amazing fan following.

I have heard this song probably a hundred+ times, but now, listening to it after many years - it has a new significance to me - it seems to hint at the truth I found myself - that when it seems like "the ships is sinking", when it seems there needs to be a "hero to save the day", when people are "taking up arm" to fight something that seems threatening them outside of themselves... we can just find a solution in all the emptiness, because its inside us - it has always been there... we are just so obsessed with finding the heroes, villains, feeling like the ship is sinking, finding solutions to an emptiness, that is actually not outside at all ... we are so busy with the "problem" that we never realize it was never there. The problem IS us looking for the problem, instead of looking at the solution within.

It's definetly the best band I've ever listened to. I've known them since I was eleven years old, almost like seven years ago now, and though I've taken a look of many other bands I've never found anything like this. It's really a great pleasure for my ears to hear this song anywhere and at any moment. What I like the most is being able to "meet" people that listen to POTF too, coz' I live in Spain and here's not too much to see about this great artists. GREAT BAND!!
