Romantic Me
Polyrock Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hope that no one's listening
Anticipating someone's there

Romantic me
Romantic me
Romantic me
Romantic
Talk
Big, big clock

I see
See a girl beside her dreams

Romantic dreams
Romantic dreams
Romantic dreams
Romantic

Talk
Big, big clock

Big, big clock

Tick, big...

I fear
Fear a man beside his schemes

Romantic schemes
Romantic schemes
A selfish dream
Such a selfish...

Swim, big fish

Swim, big...

Swim, big fish

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Polyrock's "Romantic Me" are somewhat cryptic, and open to interpretation. The first few lines suggest a feeling of insecurity and fear of being judged, with the singer hoping that no one is listening and anticipating someone's presence. It could be interpreted as a fear of falling short of expectations or not meeting societal norms, leading to feelings of inadequacy and isolation.

As the song progresses, the repeating chorus "Romantic me" and "Romantic dreams" could be seen as the singer's yearning for a life that is more romantic and idealistic, possibly filled with love and adventure. However, this is juxtaposed by the line "Fear a man beside his schemes," suggesting that the singer may feel trapped or stuck in their current situation, with a fear of taking risks or pursuing their dreams.

The use of imagery such as the "big, big clock" and "swim, big fish" adds to the dreamlike and surreal tone of the song, and could represent the passing of time or the inevitability of change. Overall, "Romantic Me" is a song that explores themes of insecurity, yearning, and the contrast between dreams and reality.

William "Billy" Robertson was my friend and neighbor until 2018 when he suddenly passed away. What a character! And what character he had! We would sing Psalm from Roxy Music at the top of our lungs while closing down the bar I ran in between our apartments. I miss him so much.

I remember 'Rock World'. That's where I first saw Polyrock, Gary Numan, Ultravox, XTC, The Specials and so many others. Great show.

@pedrofaba

So happy to share this video and Polyrock with my kids. I owned all their albums. I learned about while working at Nickelodeon one summer, before the station went commercial. They had appeared on a show, I think it was called Livewire, and they played this song.

I remember seeing their vid late late at night on MTV. For a kid of 15. I was hypnotized by this music. Saved some money , and asked my parents for the rest I went out and bought the album. 30 years later still love that style of music but sadly I can't remember what ever happened to my album tho. Thanx for posting this vid. Takes me back.

Living through New Wave, late 70's early 80's, I miss it all, very much. Great music from this era! Polyrock were a New York band, not nearly as popular as Talking Heads. The stuff coming out of England and Athens, Georgia at the same time would knock your skull off! A great time for new music!
