1) Pressgang is a British folk-rock/alt-folk band formed in Reading in 1985 featuring Damian Clarke (vocals, guitar, Hurdy Gurdy), George Whitfield (vocals, accordion, whistle), and Ian Munt, and subsequently Tony Lyons, (vocals, drums) and Cliff Eastabrook (vocals, bass guitar).
After a short spell as “Bedlam”, and being advised on air by DJ John Peel on his radio programme to change name, the band settled on PressGang as a name to suit their fast-paced re-writes of traditional British and Irish folk songs.
The band released their first album “Rogues!” on vinyl in 1989, after a single “Watch the Wall”.
A tour led to personnel changes and a two-years hiatus, until Neil Carter and John Forrester joined from the band The Colour Mary.
Signed to Reading-based label Cat Records, the band recorded “Burning Boats” (1994) and Fire! (1995).
The next album, "Mappa Mundi" (1997), on TWAH!, was a chronicle of band life on the road.
Another bass/drum change followed, with Miranda Sykes (also of Show of Hands) and Maclaine Colston joining. The next CD (Dancing in our Dreams) was again influenced by live performances and touring adventures.
Another touring hiatus took place from 1999 to 2003. The band continues to perform.

They used ships that were too old to sail anymore as "lodging" for impressed sailors called receiving ships. This way, even when they were in port or waiting to be assigned, they didn't go ashore to prevent them from fleeing. You could easily expect to not set foot on land for the rest of your life (given the horrid conditions in war at sea combined with the long terms of service).
Tina Anderson
Never were so many good men treated so badly. "People love to hear about an ounce of glory,
made from a ton of misery" John Masefield Sea life in Nelsons Navy.

Popular song in Poland among polish scouts. Of course sang in Polish but in a different style, more straight, less melodic, heavy. I really like this song, reminds me good old days
StarGazer
Is it about the same subject?
Anna K
StarGazer oh yes, same words. Just heavier melody

When I was a little kid, I thought the Royal Navy must have been a lot better than the American Navy because our sailors joined after they were "Impressed!"

Some of those who were press ganged were held captive in that state for 18 years. When they re-visited the UK they were held impressed and prostitutes were brought aboard for you will know what. Not a topic over dicussed or alluded to. Thanks for this item ... really nice.

It took a while to find but the performer is William Pint (rhymes with mint) from Washington state from the album "Victory sings at sea"
