In 1995 a self-produced demo garnered interest from various record labels and the group changed its name to Prettier Than Pink. VIVA Records eventually signed them up. After five months, an eponymous debut album went Gold in the Philippines and the single "Cool Ka Lang," written and composed by the band's lead singer and founding member Lei Bautista, reached no. 1 on the OPM charts.
By 1997, Prettier Than Pink had undergone a line-up transformation, with Bautista remaining as the group's leader. Their second album, UnPink, took a less commercial turn; but the release received regional airplay with "Baby" and a remake of the OPM classic "BF Kong Baduy." In 1998, Lei Bautista was nominated for an Awit award for "Baby."
Bautista left for the U.S. shortly thereafter, reviving Prettier Than Pink in America as a New Wave-styled group with guitarist Pamela Aquino, bassist Melody del Mundo, and drummer Ann Connolly. In 2005, Prettier Than Pink started recording their U.S. debut for the Sutton Records label.

Iniwan, binihag mo ako
Ngunit nang maranasan ko na
Pag-ibig ng iba
Wala ka pa lang say, pare ko!
The song 'Akala Mo' by Prettier than Pink is about a person who has been taken for granted by their partner. The first line, "Akala mo, niloko mo ako" translates to "You think you fooled me," implying that the partner believes they have been cheated on. The second line, "Iniwan, binihag mo ako" means "You left, you captivated me," suggesting that although the partner may have left, the person is still emotionally captive to them. However, as the song progresses, the person realizes that the partner did not love them, and they were not worth their time. The line "Pag-ibig ng iba, wala ka pa lang say, pare ko!" means "You are nothing compared to the love of others," showing that the person has moved on and found love elsewhere.
Overall, the song shows the process of healing and realizing one's worth after being taken for granted by a partner. The lyrics are emotional, and the music is impactful, making the song relatable to many people who have experienced similar situations.
