Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Born 2 Die
Prince Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's a bad girl
She gets you high
Born to die, born to die
Born to die, born to die
Born to die, born to die
She sells everything, from A to Z
From the hustle of the streets (oh yeah)
She left the church a long time ago
Said they couldn't teach what they did not know
That's when she lost her virginity
And now she's pimpin' every bottle
From New York to L.A (L.A)
Ask her why she'd do that thing
She says it's always been that way (always been that way)
Jump back Jack, you might be next if they try to cut mama's cake
(What the deal, Daddy?)
And ask her what the deal is, this is what she said
Born to die, born to die
If you ain't livin' right, you know you're
Born to die, better watch out
Get ya, get ya, so high, so high
You know, everybody's getting (so high)
I gotta get my hustle on
She runs six streets in Oakland
Clear down to the 'Frisco bay (ooh)
Why she concerned, crime does pay
Ask her when, she'd say "From the first day"
Once you bend the knees to get back to the truth
Of who we are, before we go astray (who we are, before we go astray)
Ask her what the deal is (what the deal, daddy?)
This is what she'll say
Born to die, born to die
If you ain't livin' right, you're surely
Born to die, (get ya, get ya)
Look out
Get ya, get ya, so high, so high
They said nothing good happens after midnight
(Get ya, get ya, so high)
Bye, bye
(Oh, yeah)
(Ooh)
(Born to die)
(Get ya, get ya)
(Ooh)
So, so high (so high)
So, so high (so)
So, so high (so)
High
(Get ya, get ya so high, so high)
(Get ya, get ya so high)
(Get ya, get ya so high, so high)
Born to die
"Man, what happened?"
"Girl, she fell from the third story window"
"What?"
"Yes, oh my God"
"I think she 'gon be cool though
But oh my goodness girl look at her"
"Oh no"
"They putting her on the gurney right now
I hope she 'gon be alright"
"Does anybody know what happened"
"Girl, she fell
She fell"
The lyrics to Prince's song "Born 2 Die" tell a story of a woman who is portrayed as a "bad girl" living a risky and dangerous lifestyle. Despite her troubled past, she seeks freedom and independence, willing to sell anything just to stay out of the hustle of the streets. The lyrics reveal that she had distanced herself from religion, feeling that the teachings couldn't provide her with the knowledge she needed. As a result, she lost her innocence and became involved in questionable activities.
The song highlights the woman's resilience and survival instincts. She is depicted as a hustler, moving from one place to another, selling bottles from New York to Los Angeles. The lyrics suggest that she engages in this lifestyle because it's what she has always known. The chorus of the song emphasizes her destiny, as she is "born to die" if she doesn't change her ways and start living right. It serves as a cautionary tale, reminding listeners of the consequences of a destructive path.
Overall, "Born 2 Die" explores themes of rebellion, sacrifice, and redemption. It sheds light on the struggles faced by individuals who feel trapped in their circumstances, making choices that may seem self-destructive but are driven by the need to survive and find a sense of freedom.

I miss him. It's ridiculous how painful his death has been on me. There will never be anyone close to Prince's caliber again. The most talented and important musician ever.

@Aundria Cooper Premo You are so blessed, you picked on his intent. Which was to help make people happy and to think. I have days that I want to take out his killers, but that’s not my job. I’m just grateful to know the truths. You do know they killed him for starting to talk about chemtrails? There’s one channel of someone who knew him, and warned him just before.

Why he hasn't been inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame is beyond me. His life long work continues to prove over and over that he's a great lyricist and "true" artist! 💜💜💜
