Ah, ah
Checkin' one, two, uh

I hitched a train (mhm)
Between here & Saint Paul (Paul)
Had no idea (no)
That I'd sleep in a pig stall (dirty, dirty)
Once I got home (oh)
The dirt that covered me
Nothing like the disappointment
That you would never see

Same page, but a different book
So much more in common if you'd only look
There's only one God (one God)
Whatever name He took
Only matters when it comes to war
What are we, what are we
What are we fighting for?

Breathe, let it
Breathe

New kids on the block
Tryin' to make their beds (mmm)
Here comes another rock (here come your)
Upside their heads (oops)
There goes the missile
Headed for the hood (oh Lord)
Trigger another car bomb (boom)
Did nobody no good

We're on the same page, but a different book
So much more in common if you'd only look (if you'd only look)
There's only one God (one God)
Whatever name He took (what-what-whatever)
Only matters when it comes to war
What are we, what are we
What are we fighting for?

All right, listen ya'll
We're about to let this thing just groove
Mmm, move
C'mon now

Chapter, verse, which came first?
Thinkin' too slow while they snatch ya purse (woo)
Faith, law, good deeds, practicing what you preach
Between you and me, TV ain't reality
That's right, I said it, it's said
Buy this, cop that, all up in ya head
24-hour news, that ain't right, huh
Them suckas gotcha daydreaming at midnight, ha

Galatians chapter three says
The law was as good as dead
Having faith in the life, death and resurrection
Of the second Adam instead
Would bring us all salvation
If there's works in the faith we choose
But if you're all alone, throwing stones
Who do you think's gonna lose?
Who do you think's gonna lose?

Same page (oh), but a different book (haha)
So much more in common if you'd only look (hey, hey only look, y'all)

Overall Meaning

Prince's song "Same Page Different Book" addresses the theme of unity and the need to find common ground despite our differences. The lyrics begin with Prince sharing a personal story of hitching a train from here to Saint Paul, ending up sleeping in a pig stall. This experience is used as a metaphor for feeling dirty and disappointed upon returning home, as if the people around him would never understand his struggles. The song suggests that despite being on the same page, individuals are reading from different books, indicating the existence of shared experiences and values that are overlooked.

Prince goes on to emphasize the importance of recognizing our commonalities rather than focusing on our differences. He highlights the universal existence of a higher power, here represented by one God with different names, and suggests that this only becomes a significant issue when it leads to conflict and war. The lyrics urge listeners to question the reasons behind the battles we fight, emphasizing the need for unity, understanding, and the pursuit of peace.

Overall, "Same Page Different Book" reflects Prince's desire for people to find harmony and mutual understanding, encouraging them to look beyond differences and recognize the shared aspects of humanity.

The funk in this is THICK! And the message on this is on point. Funk as only Prince can do! I love this joint! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

Noah Brown

I love this side of Prince! Obviously his main thing was RnB, and I obviously love all of that, but if there are two sides of Prince that people should definitely explore more of, it's his rock side (Plectrumelectrum) and his hard funk side (This, Rainbow Children). This track is so epic, starts off without any teasing, just straight into the groovy, percussion-laden groove that's so hard you'd be mistaken for thinking you accidentally put a Trouble Funk jam on. And then just as it's starting to feel just the slightest bit samey, bam! A badass rap verse that feels like it could slot perfectly into a track on Queen Latifah's Black Reign album. Honestly love this track, and the album, so much!
