Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Prince Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I don’t think they ready
Happy birthday
It’s Prince
You like laundry you gon fold after that heat to you
I had to get this shit myself they ain’t gon eat for you
Flip the mattress kick the sheets so they don’t sleep on you
Life is chess you might get checked so keep a piece on you
Bitch that’s BP, til the deep soil
Cooking up the beef with the cheap oil
Then blow it all away with this reef blower
As a youngin sending bitches was the regular
At 15 i was busting dates right through the cellular
I ain’t tell too many niggas so they can’t tell you none
But if you need some pussy have my bitches sell you some
I cut it out you wasn’t gon catch me in no cell or none
Ain’t smoke no weed ain’t pop no xans but i start selling em
That shit ain’t cool but when you need some food you gon start selling sum
This not no game not for no fame no fairy tales or none
I popped a pistol, popped her cherry I was like 12 or some
Late night Butler Park, 11 or 12 or some
Bad nigga fucking shit up ducking 12 was fun
Ain’t gang banging got at least 12 niggas that’ll wet you up
But I’ll do that shit myself on a lonely mission
Use a smifn
Rip a nigga body like we in the kitchen
No competition when it’s pimpin, we don’t trip off bitches
That mean no simping, no slipping, and definitely no trickin
I put the figures in my bag while i’m bagging bitches
Can’t catch a feeling not even if i was at the dentist
Like 23 since 03 I left you all a witness
I’m 23 minus 3 and I’m about my business
Here’s the consensus
When you see me there’s no fucking blemish
More hoes than racket and I’m talking about a fucking tennis
I fuck with ratchets and I also like some boujee bitches
I need some Daddy what you need real boostin bitches
Dumb as fuck doing anything for them dollars huh
Growing up I had straight A’s i’m like a scholar huh
If you a threat you getting popped it ain’t no squashing it
I’m that nigga but i ain’t worried bout being popular
I was stomping niggas faces after dropping em
She keep my dick in her mouth like a thermometer
She swallow all my kids I’m a father huh
Kicking hoes out the house like I play soccer huh
What you know bout food max, Chimichanga blue packs
What you know bout flipping 5 for 10 of them food stamps
You the type of nigga bang just to be a cool cat
You the type to fight the nigga when you get ya boo snatched
Aye this nigga mad he got his boo snatched
Would’ve thought he was a saint when he see me he be like who dat
Dis that same young nigga that broke yo boo back
She caught a flight to fuck, I beat it up and then she flew back
It’s cool Kap, she on her knees, got that from you Kap
I put in her in stance like she then Center and I’m you Kap
I am not her man, I’m just be fucking don’t confuse that
Superbad Evan nigga go and put that lube back
Now I’m on a knee like Kap but shooting dice on it
They from the hood until they almost lose they life for it
Squad full of bad plumbers we got pipes blowing
Tight roping, I ain’t talking Adidas but my stripes showing
The veins full of hot shit, put some ice on em
I got ya girl panties wet put some rice on em
Passing bitches to my niggas might say hike for em
Niggas be rockin them busted kicks they Like Mike on em
Oh shit this is a hit this my type of shit
My fingers fucking hurting can’t stop typing shit
Fuck the phone from the dome so I ain’t writing shit
Doctor bring the beat back damn I recycled it
She call me Prince the plumber cuz i’m always piping it
I be stepping in that pussy like a hiking trip
Best believe she pop that pussy like a Vichonin
And I always beat it up it’s like I’m violent
She say she need it everyday it’s like her vitamins
The way I put it in her stomach, I’m her diet shit
She give me brain to keep me sane, she my psychiatrist
Ain’t got no wrinkles in my game it’s like I ironed it
You got caught you gon singing like a opera huh
You can only fuck yo bitches off the vodka huh
Yo chain clean what that is, that’s that copper huh
You ain’t make it just cuz you ain’t have no papa huh
They get wetter when they see me that’s aqua huh
Must be the dreads off my head I’m like a rasta huh
You hit em up they don’t hit back that must be awkward huh
You know white get me right, I know the doctor huh
Bitch I know the doctor
Bitch I know the doctor
Oh my God

Happy Birthday
The lyrics to Prince & The Revolution's song "Happy Birthday" are complex and filled with various themes and imagery. The song starts with a proclamation that the listener may not be ready for what's about to come, hinting at the intensity and depth of the upcoming verses. The line "You like laundry you gon fold after that heat to you" suggests that some people may lose their composure or crumble under pressure.
The lyrics then delve into Prince's personal journey, highlighting his determination and self-reliance. He mentions having to do things himself because others won't do it for him, metaphorically representing his drive and independence. The line "Flip the mattress kick the sheets so they don’t sleep on you" implies the need to constantly disrupt and challenge the status quo to avoid being overlooked or underestimated.
Throughout the song, Prince emphasizes the harsh realities of life, using vivid imagery and personal experiences. He mentions selling drugs to survive, facing violence at a young age, and his disdain for being caught up in a life of fame and superficiality. He also boasts about his prowess with women and his ability to navigate various social dynamics.
