Prince Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby why you actin’ so conceited
You acting different in public think I don’t see it
Girl why you trying to be like someone that you’re not, ay
You got us tangled up in this like it’s a knot
And you keep saying that you want to get the newest Louis bag
And be like every other girl but baby what is up with that, that
Be honest with yourself, yourself, you got it

Lately you ain’t showing love don’t play me like Atari
I just want some love from you, baby can you call me
House parties in LA I know you like to party
Why don’t you just spend some time with me
Woah woah, I was like hello hello
What is your name girl, girl you looking wonderful
That’s when I picked you up, yeah you was down below
I hope you do the same yeah yeah
I just wish that you could be more loving to me
‘Cause I don’t wanna fall apart no no no no no

Baby why you actin’ so conceited
You acting different in public think I don’t see it
Girl why you trying to be like someone that you’re not, ay
You got us tangled up in this like it’s a knot
And you keep saying that you want to get the newest Louis bag
And be like every other girl but baby what is up with that, that
Be honest with yourself, yourself, you got it

Texted you at 3 AM, told me you were out with friends
Oh sh*t here we go again oh oh oh
All your friends be teaching things that you know you shouldn’t do
Lil shawty can’t you see I’m the one that’s good for you
I don’t want you to be exactly like your friends
I need you to do a 180 and make amends
Baby I wanna love you and treat you like a queen
And treat you just like everything you dreamed to be
I just wish that you could be more loving to me
‘Cause I don’t wanna fall apart no no no no no

Baby why you actin’ so conceited
You acting different in public think I don’t see it
Girl why you trying to be like someone that you’re not, ay
You got us tangled up in this like it’s a knot
And you keep saying that you want to get the newest Louis bag

And be like every other girl but baby what is up with that, that
Be honest with yourself, yourself, you got it

Overall Meaning

In "House Party," Prince summons the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff to his party, where he invites him to show off his skills for the crowd. Prince wants to give the people a taste of the crazy nights he and Jazzy Jeff used to have back in Philly, where they would "rip things up at like bart Room and Central High, and Overbrook High and all those places." He encourages Jeff to push the limits of the turntables and play with the crowd's energy, commanding Jeff to break down the music, manipulate it, slow it down, and show off his scratching techniques.

This song is a tribute to the DJ who truly knows how to rally the crowd and bring everyone together in a joyous moment of shared energy. Prince wants nothing more than to give his guests the ultimate house party experience and create a night they'll never forget.
