Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Let it go
If it's not gon' praise his name just, let it go
If it's not moving the same way, let it go
If it's chopping up your soul, just let it go
You gotta let it go
Turn away and let it go
What if the blind could see
What if my past became my present, would i play hide and seek
Or would i bring the past back and tell my present sleep
Got me struggling daily
Still getting stuck in situations
My heart is complacent
Not worried about how i live or how my life keep changing
Lusted for things of this world i started my snaking
Built up guilt stuck to my back but God said let it go
If it's not gon' praise his name, just let it go
If it's not moving the same way, let it go
If it's chopping up your soul, just let it go
You gotta let it go
Turn away and let it go
If it's not gon' praise his name, just let it go
If it's not moving the same way, let it go
If it's chopping up your soul, just let it go
You gotta let it go
Turn away and let it go
Like bro, I was really troubled
Hanging round with the wrong crew got me in scuffles
Had me fighting for my life, the devil want my soul
He really want my soul
Sinner man at last
Tried to put away my past
But it was still stuck inside
I really desired that
Starting smoking just to ease the pain
The pain i thought i had
Thought it was bringing me joy
Asking brodie for a tap, like lemme tap that
I felt like the man
I felt like the king
This is not a dream
This is real life
This is me
Is this really me, Is this real life
The more i gave in, the less i got out
I wanted more so i just stayed in, was hard to get out there
But they like they David how you living tho
How you talk bout Christ but have a another way of living bro
How you preach the word and praise God to the ceiling bro
I was such a hypocrite but God called and said David Let it go
If it's not gon' praise his name, just let it go
If it's not moving the same way, let it go
If it's chopping up your soul, just let it go
You gotta let it go
Turn away and let it go
If it's not gon' praise his name, just let it go
If it's not moving the same way, let it go
If it's chopping up your soul, just let it go
You gotta let it go
Turn away and let it go
I can't let it go, You gotta let it go
I can't let it go, You gotta let it go
I can't let it go, You gotta let it go
I can't let it go, You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You got it
You keep saying
The shame is to much, i can't handle
I'm so afraid
But you need to change your ways, repent for all them days you spit in Gods face
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
You gotta let it go
Let it go
You gotta it go, it go, it go
Let Go
The lyrics to Prince's song "Let's Jam It" seem to explore themes of redemption, repentance, and the power of letting go. The repetitive phrase "let it go" serves as a mantra encouraging the listener to release negative influences, sinful behavior, and past mistakes in order to embrace a new way of living and praising God.
The song begins by urging the listener to let go of anything that does not praise God's name, anything that does not align with the path of righteousness. It emphasizes the need to let go of things that weigh down the soul and hinder spiritual growth. The lyrics then delve into a reflection on past sins and their potential impact on the present and future. The singer grapples with the consequences of their actions and wonders if they should hide from the past or confront it head-on. They express the struggle of being caught in unfavorable situations and feeling complacent in a lifestyle that goes against their true beliefs.
As the song progresses, the singer shares personal experiences of being troubled, hanging around the wrong crowd, and engaging in self-destructive behaviors. They highlight their battle with the temptations of the world, trying to find joy and ease the pain through smoking and indulging in sinful pleasures. However, they come to realize their hypocrisy and the incongruity between their proclaimed faith and their actions. The song ultimately emphasizes the need for change, for letting go of the old self and embracing a new life dedicated to God.
Overall, "Let's Jam It" is a call to repentance and emphasizes the transformative power of letting go of sinful ways, negative influences, and past mistakes, in order to live a life that aligns with one's beliefs and values. It encourages the listener to turn away from the past and embrace a new path of spirituality and praise.
