I don't have no gold and I don't have a pager
Where I'm from there wasn't no scene
I got my information from Highlights Magazine
I drove a jeep that my parents bought me
Drove it over 60 but the cops never caught me
Wore clothes from the Gap watched the Dukes and Daisy
Sneakin' boys up to my room
Hoppin' skippin' jumpin' like those kids in zoom
But I brought home the 4.0 for my daddy Sam
And I used my fake ID to buy beer from the Busch can
In Princess Superstar's song "I'm White," she reflects on her upbringing as a white person from Pennsylvania. The first stanza sets the scene, as she acknowledges that she does not come from a wealthy background like many of her peers. Instead, she grew up with more humble means, and even received some of her information and entertainment from Highlights Magazine. Her lack of means is also apparent in the fact that she never had a pager.
The second stanza, however, also sheds light on some of Princess Superstar's privileges as a white person. She acknowledges that she drove a jeep that her parents bought her, and despite driving over the speed limit, she never got in trouble with the police. She also shopped at the popular clothing store, the Gap, and had access to popular shows like the Dukes of Hazzard. However, she did engage in some minor rebellion, such as shoplifting from Macy's.
The third stanza seems to reflect some of the contradictions in Princess Superstar's upbringing. On the one hand, she talks about bringing boys over to her room and having a sense of youthful exuberance like the "kids in zoom." On the other hand, she highlights one of her greatest accomplishments - earning a 4.0 and impressing her father, Sam. She also bought beer with a fake ID, indicating that she was not yet of age to drink legally. In this way, Princess Superstar depicts a complicated but honest portrayal of her upbringing as a white person from Pennsylvania.
