Foul Taste of Freedom
Pro-Pain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Young, dumb and helpless, in the states
You say you ain't got no money, I can relate
I lost my job and my house and my, piece of mind
We're in the deepest depression of, modern time

A thousand points of light shinin', in my face
Eyes are blinded by a can of Republican mace
Shinin' seas of starving people are the, unemployed
Stars and stripes are rubber checks, null and void

We are the red, white and blue that you bleed
We have the right to survive and succeed
Worthless and weak is "be all you can be"
Democracy leaves a foul taste of freedom in me

Budget cuts and tax hikes, crush the land
Of plenty, see the weak die by gods hand
If you're proud of your country then you're probably rich
But if you're fed up you better piss, moan and bitch
Yankee doodle dickweed went to town
Apple pie and Chevrolet shot him down

A patriotic, fatheaded, sucker, freak
Is proud to serve the country that had served him weak..

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pro-Pain's "Foul Taste of Freedom" paint a bleak picture of American society in the midst of an economic depression. The opening lines speak to the desperation felt by many Americans when faced with financial hardship, with the singer acknowledging the struggles of those who have lost everything. The verse then expands to critique the political system, with a reference to George H.W. Bush's "thousand points of light" initiative, which aimed to promote volunteerism and community service. Here, the line is reinterpreted as a blinding propaganda campaign aimed at distracting citizens from their suffering. The chorus powerfully declares the band's own patriotism while challenging the conventional notions of what it means to be a true patriot, as the singer sees the "foul taste of freedom" in the failures of democracy in the face of economic despair.

The second verse is even more scathing, with vivid imagery invoking a natural disaster or famine to describe the plight of the unemployed, and a metaphor equating the American flag with a bad check. When the singer declares "We are the red, white and blue that you bleed," it's a powerful rejection of the idea that patriotism is synonymous with blind loyalty and unwavering support for the status quo. The bridge is perhaps the most direct in its criticism, specifically calling out budget cuts and tax hikes as tools that crush the poor and weak. The final verse invokes both the beloved childhood song "Yankee Doodle" and the quintessential symbols of Americana like apple pie and Chevrolet, but subverts them to create a scathing critique of American exceptionalism that rings even truer today than when the song was first released in 1992.

Whole album is incredible- not a single bad track. More recently my band (Inverter) got to open for Pro-pain near Boston, and Gary was an incredibly nice guy.

Years later and this song relates more than ever

scheufele44

Its sad to think that this song is 20 years old and it still translates to the events of present day America. This is way Pro-Pain is the best band ever. The music is true, realistic and relates to the common man.
