Listen, the originals were absolute classics ~ but don't act like the special sffects methods used were flawless. CGI is simply another medium to the other multiple special effects techniques.

Especially in old janky effects, where the ugliness (from how old it is) makes it even scarier. Same goes for some early 90's cgi.

Not to say that the effects in old indiana jones films are ugly, it's just that there's something missing in this one when compared to the guy that's rapidly aging in the third film.

The aliens were the nicest characters in this, they gave her everything she wanted because that's what she said, they commended them by leaving and bringing a healthy waterfall, made for a pretty cool view much of never seen before by man...and then brought Indiana's hat out of his house all the way to a wedding out of respect, while also helping Spalko travel dimensions to become a high general in the galactic empire..what character development

Well, Indiana Jones does not seek treasure for himself, his entire character is summed up by the words from The Last Crusade: "It belongs in a Museum." That's why in this movie, he smiles and acknowledges "that they [mayans] were archeologists," because of the supposed shrine that was actually a museum in that room. He fights the bad guys for the simple fact that things should be documented, and its power be left alone. It's actually why he doesn't argue when the US military takes everything and puts it in Area 51

@Vic In the novelization, he isn’t even mad at the US military taking the Ark and storing it, he was mad that they LIED to them about letting it be in the museum. Marcus asking them where they put the Ark and Indy asking who the Top Men were can be the same thing as “We know what it can do if you mess around with it, so do you have men smart enough not to?” Heck, even in this movie, one of the main things you see in the beginning is that he is offended by the Red Scare-era government accusing him of voluntarily aiding Russian spies and trying to character assassinate him when he had no choice but to do so under duress. If it’s one thing Indy has been shown to hate, it’s liars like that.

@inlpwetrust I think that's part of the point about him not caring about ownership. If it belongs to the village in the case of the Sankara stones, he leaves them in their care. The same thing he does to the artefacts he feels belong to museums. So he also successfully acquired and gave away the Sankara stones in the same way he did the ark, and he "acquired" the grail (as he was able to save his father with it) as well only to have it left there.

My theory is they brought her on as a replacement for the member they'd lost.

I saw this when it came out when I was 6 or 7 years old. I remember being super excited for this movie because my super awesome parents showed me the trilogy. Even back when I was a stupid little kid I remember being super confused that there were aliens(sorry, inter-dimensional beings) in Indiana Jones.

There was a lot of critizism on the alien thematic, but I think it was a brilliant addition to the Indiana Jones lore. We got Biblical elements and even some kind of dark cult thing in the previous movies. Why would aliens be a negative thing? Sure, the execution could have been better, but the concept was truly fascinating as it expanded the Indy universe even more.

Watched this movie once again but on New Years and all I have to say is that it was a great introduction to Indiana Jones' son, and how the ending showed the doors opening and his hat flying to his son with his son picking up as well as trying to wear it with Indiana Jones then snatching t from him and being like "thanks". Like that to me, honestly shows that he was like "not yet son, its not over for me yet, there's much more to come", etc which really gave us hope that maybe sometime there would be another film, despite the cast and Harrison himself already being much older and the fact is, there is. Now there's another movie coming out, but this time in Italy. Like what an amazing film this was, I remember when this movie first came out it was everywhere, there was so much hype, everyone was talking about it, the comic book was released again, the comic book was literally everywhere, LEGO was coming out with games, LEGO builds, etc, and that's what honestly brought back Indania Jones after years and years of not having a film especially in the 90s where they haven't released any films. Like the fact that they even brought the love of his life from the first film to here, especially with them being older now was such a throwback. Not only that but even though this movie wasn't the best compared to others since it was about aliens, it was still a nice film especially with the cast being much older, and how all they wanted to say is that were still around and that we haven't lost/forgotten about Indiana Jones. This year I've even decided to re-watch every Indiana Jones movie with my brother now that there releasing a new film this year, and all I have to say is what a great way to start the year with finishing with the last ever movie ever released - Indiana Jones 4 and now having the fifth one coming out this year. Like what a time it was when this was first released, especially when the comic books were everywhere. Anyways, Happy New Years everyone!!! Wishing you all the best, myself the best and hopefully this year will be our year!!! Hopefully the fifth one goes well but yeah. Even though Indiana Jones 4 wasn't the best and the worst compared to the previous one, we all still have to realize that they tried making it more futuristic and that most of the cast especially Harrison Ford are much older.

One reason I love the Indy films is the running theme that all the major villains are killed by the power they seek.
Belloq, Dietrich and Toht all look into the Ark.
Mola Ram gets burned by the Sankara stone and falls to his death.
Donovan drinks from the wrong Grail, while Elsa's lust for the true Grail leads to her death.
Spalko returns the Skull to Akator and wishes for infinite knowledge, which ends up killing her.

and because of that, the thing people hate about the second lego game is that all villains actually get the power they seek. donovan, despite clearly choosing a random grail, gains powers from a massive whirlwind, bespite the grail not giving any special powers, belloq looks into the ark and a giant electrical skeleton being comes out, but doesn't actually kill belloq himself, and actually grants belloq the power, but the writers forget that its actually god that's powering the being, and you easily defeat it. mola ram doesn't get burned by the stones, and instead he uses them to bring the statue of kali to life and controls it until it burns up and gets thrown apart by the player. then finally, spalko gets zapped by one of the skeletons, and becomes super powerful, encased in a hovering electrical shield.

That shows that the true villain to be fought in movies and games about arqueology and treasure hunting is the greed for the treasure or the artifact. The hero wants to protect the treasure or artifact even if it loses him at the end. The villain will not be satisfied with having only a small part of the treasure or having the power of the artifact for some time, he wants all the treasure or all the power for himself and that greed becomes his downfall.

I think people are misdirecting their criticism of this movie in that regard. It’s just that the second half of the movie is a bit boring and dumb. If the whole thing were as good as “Raiders of the Lost Ark” or “The Last Crusade,” people wouldn’t have negative feelings about it in general and wouldn’t be so unhappy with the extraterrestrial premise.

Despite all the hate towards this movie I still stand by my opinion when I say it was better than The Temple of Doom. This is the one that I find myself watch the most because I just can’t have a bad time watching it. My personal favourite is still The last crusade but this movie is very good too. The various soundtracks in this movie are in my opinion the best in the entire series, there are clear character goals and motivations and it also has some good (and also a bit gruesome) action sequences.

While everyone has a tendency to dismiss this film as one of the less impressive Indiana Jones film, I choose to look at it as one of the better films of the franchise. And I was just glad to see Harrison Ford back in the leather jacket and the hat. It was like seeing Han Solo again in The Force Awakens.

I never understood why people hated this ending so much... I mean, in the Universe of Indiana Jones, the teachings of multiple religions are all simultaneously true, but to have aliens also exists is just dumb? I honestly thought this was a really awesome and completely unexpected twist, and I admire them for trying something different with the series, instead of following an entirely predictable movie formula.

I think that it might have been a lot more intriguing and in-line with Indiana Jones if they took that idea, of inter-dimensional alien-like beings beings worshipped as gods, and executed it more like an H.P. Lovecraft cosmic horror story (similar to “The Call of Cthulhu” or later works inspired by Lovecraftian fiction like Bloodborne). If the alien beings were portrayed in that way, where they seem to innately have supernatural powers (not just higher intelligence and more advanced technology) and even modern people might consider forming cults that worship them, then that would allow their otherworldliness to feel more on par with scenes like the Ark being opened. Plus, it think a more Lovecraftian style would work even more, considering that a common trope in those stories involves people going insane when they try to comprehend such eldritch entities/knowledge, and how similar it is to how Oxley and Spalko end up.

This scene was pretty weird, but I liked all the effects in this, it was pretty epic!!! This was a good movie, but there are some scenes that are just not really my favorite because it was either dull or just too far fetched.

When her eyes light on fire, the lightsaber ignition sound is played, and in the scene where the ufo mothership flies out the temple the music starts to sound a lot more like Star Wars. Indiana Jones and Star Wars are in the same universe probably.

I honestly think if Anthony Ingruber would have played Mutt Williams not only do I think this movie would have been way better. But I also think we would have gotten a fifth Indiana Jones movie way sooner and earlier like in 2010 only two years after this one. With Anthony Ingruber being the new Indiana Jones in the fifth and possibly sixth Indiana Jones movie that would have came out in 2012.
