The band played a series of gigs at Manchester's In The City festival. James Mudriczki, Neil McDonald, Anthony Szuminski and Kevin Matthews met on a bus on their way to watch the Stone Roses play at Spike Island. Matthews watched the Stone Roses' Gary Mounfield play bass and Matthews bought himself a bass guitar.[citation needed] The rest of the members followed suit and bought the necessary equipment to complete a band, although they had little to no musical experience or training.
Through much practice their music developed and they decided on the name Puressence, a name instantly identified by most Mancunians for the paper letters 'P'-'U'-'R'-'E'-'S'-'S'-'E'-'N'-'C'-'E', which were plastered around Manchester city centre, on derelict buildings, and on bridges (the most notable being the railway bridge opposite the Haçienda).Manchester independent record label 2 Damn Loud released two singles and there was a further single with Rough Trade Singles Club.
The big breakthrough came a couple of years later, when the band signed to Island Records.
In August 2003, after more than ten years with Puressence, guitarist and founder member McDonald left the band. He was replaced by Lowell Killen, who is originally from the Isle of Man. He has played in other bands and left Manchester band Dry Riser to join Puressence.
In 2004, the band played at The Witchwood in Ashton-under-Lyne.
In 2006, the band released a single titled "Palisades" on new Manchester label Reaction, followed by an album, Don't Forget To Remember, in September 2007.
On 10 and 11 September 2008 Puressence played their first shows in the US. The first was at the Mercury Lounge in New York City. The next night they played the Apple Store in SoHo. The opening song at the Mercury Lounge was "I Suppose". They passed out free CD singles of "Don't Know Any Better" to many fans around the United States.
The band split in late 2013.
The band currently consisted of:
James Mudriczki: Vocals
Lowell Killen: Guitar
Kevin Matthews: Bass guitar
Tony Szuminski: Drums / percussion
I Suppose

When all you ever gave was nothing,
I suppose you taught me well now,
When all I ever learned was something,
I suppose that I'm all right now,
I'm all right now and I suppose it,
They suppose they taught me well now,
All right now, all right now, all right now,
There's no horses left to bet on,
And all your pretty purse is blown away,
Someone shows me I've been stepped on,
And now I'm left with nothing more to say,
And I propose we're not all right now,
But I'm all right now, and I propose it,
They suppose they taught me well now,
You taught me hell now and no one knows it,
You're getting sucked in little by little,
And I suppose you feel all right now, all right now, don't feel,
You're getting shot down a little by little,
And I suppose you feel all right now and no one knows it,
( I've got nothing and I feel fine)
(I'm right now, I'm right now)
Have you lost your feeling?
Have you lost your sense of breathing?
Have you gained that tainted feeling?
So, so cold,
Someone poisoned what you're eating,
You're getting shot down, you're getting pushed in, a little by little,
And I suppose you feel all right now, all right now, don't feel,
You're getting shot down a little by little,
And I suppose you feel all right now, all right now, don't feel,
You're getting pushed in a little by little,
And I'm all right now and no one knows it,
And no one knows it, and no one knows it,
And no one knows it, and no one knows it.
The lyrics to Puressence's "I Suppose" tell a story of understanding and resilience in the face of hardships. The singer acknowledges that everything he was given amounted to nothing, and yet he was able to learn and grow from those experiences. He admits that he's all right now, but proposes that others around him may not be. There are no more horses to bet on, indicating a loss of hope and direction. Someone has stepped on him, but he's still standing and has nothing more to say. The singer also acknowledges that others may be feeling all right now, despite being sucked in and shot down little by little. The song could be interpreted as a commentary on life's trials and how they can shape us into who we are today.
Overall, the lyrics to "I Suppose" convey a sense of resilience and acceptance in the face of adversity. Despite being stepped on and shot down, the singer has come out the other side and is now all right. However, he understands that others may not be as fortunate and may be feeling the effects of hardship little by little. The song is a reminder that we are all shaped by our experiences and that sometimes it takes a difficult journey to get to a better place.

I suppose that I'm all right now,
I think I'm okay at this point,
When all you ever gave was nothing,
You didn't give me anything in our relationship,
I suppose you taught me well now,
You taught me some valuable lessons,
When all I ever learned was something,
I learned some things from our experiences,
They suppose they taught me well now,
Others think they taught me something valuable,
You taught me hell now and no one knows it,
The truth is you taught me something horrible and no one else knows,
There's no horses left to bet on,
I don't have any good options to choose from anymore,
And all your pretty purse is blown away,
You've spent all of your money and resources,
Someone shows me I've been stepped on,
I've been mistreated by someone and it's been revealed to me,
And now I'm left with nothing more to say,
I have nothing left to add to the situation,
And I propose we're not all right now,
I think things are not okay,
But I'm all right now, and I propose it,
But despite that, I think I'm okay,
You're getting sucked in little by little,
You're being pulled into something gradually,
And I suppose you feel all right now, all right now, don't feel,
And you may feel okay in the moment, even though you shouldn't,
You're getting shot down a little by little,
You're being taken down gradually,
And no one knows it, and no one knows it.
And no one else is aware of it.
