Pyewackett played traditional folk music by the motto ‘pop music from the last five centuries’: 15th century Italian dances, a capella harmonies, traditional songs in systems/minimalist settings, 1920’s ballads, etc.. The distinctive sound was charecterised by the unusual combination of woodwinds, strings and keyboards. The voices were also a strong trademark. All these features of the Pyewackett sound are shown best on the second album the band released in 1984, The Man in the Moon Drinks Claret.
It is this album that has been rereleased in Music & Words’ Folk Classics series. At the time of this recording the band was formed by Ian Blake, Bill Martin, Mark Emerson, Rosie Cross and guest drummer Micky Barker. The album has been co-produced by Andrew Cronshaw.

I absolutely loved Pyewackett. Heard them live at Sidmouth Festival. Will never forget.

These fine people were my friends back in London. Ian Blake gave me some piano lessons but then he moved to Australia. I hope they are all well. I loved their music and the humour they sometimes put in to the songs. ☺
Thank you for putting this on YT.

I am always astonished when I receive such comments - these musicians are like legends to me and I feel blessed just by having the opportunity to honour them by sharing their music. Getting to interact with people who met them, like you, goes way beyond the best of my expectations, thanks a lot!

I have only just seen you reply. You have fine taste in music, I shall enjoy listening to more of your selection. :)
I met Ian as we had a mutual interest in synthesisers. He plays keyboards and clarinet amongst others. I went to many of their concerts around the London Folk clubs. One of the best nights I recall was at a jamming evening in a pub in Islington. Ian went off to Australia and after that I lost touch with them. I hope they are still pleasing souls with their most 'melodious twang!'.
Anyone know of their whereabouts?

I believe I have another album of theirs as well as this one. Buried away put I'll try and look for it soon.

I saw them playing in the foyer of the National Theatre ~1983. I remember the name because I got a (very large) badge, still, have it!
As a synth-obsessed teen, went to look at the equipment and was impressed with... hmm... was it a Prophet 5? Or maybe a Yamaha CS1? I really liked the integration of synth sounds in folk - eg. other contemporaries Battlefield Band and Fiddlers Dram.
@Stibsyt
@@bornhuman67 Bill worked for Yamaha - I saw him use a TX81Z once with Pyewackett! I can also remember seeing Stockton's Wing around about the same period and they were using an Emulator, go figure...but I did see Pyewackett play The Police's 'Spirits In The Material World' as an encore once. In a folk club. It was better than the original version...

Love the album. We had it at the time of its release. Saw them perform some of these songs at the Towersey Folk Festival, 1980 maybe. Happy memories (less so of falling out of the back of the car on the way!). 😉😆

I'm so glad to hear that! This album means a lot to me as it was one of my first encounters with Brit folk revival (believe or not I started with such records and not the mostly famous ones) around 2013... since then I wish I was born some decades earlier..
@landsnailproject2875
Use to follow them in the 1980!! great music, last time I saw them was at the Sun Hotel Folk Club at Hitchin, in UK, your video has brought some great memories..thank you!!
