I'm Going Slightly Mad
Queen Lyrics
When the outside temperature rises
And the meaning is oh so clear
One thousand and one yellow daffodils
Begin to dance in front of you, oh dear
Are they trying to tell you something?
You're missing that one final screw
You're simply not in the pink my dear
To be honest you haven't got a clue
I'm going slightly mad
I'm going slightly mad
It finally happened, ooh woh
It finally happened, I'm slightly mad
Oh dear
I'm one card short of a full deck
I'm not quite the shilling
One wave short of a shipwreck
I'm not my usual top billing
I'm coming down with a fever
I'm really out to sea
This kettle is boiling over
I think I'm a banana tree
Oh dear
I'm going slightly mad
I'm going slightly mad (I'm going slightly mad)
It finally happened, happened
It finally happened, uh huh
It finally happened, I'm slightly mad
Oh dear
Uh uh ah ah
Uh uh ah ah
I'm knitting with only one needle
Unraveling fast it's true
I'm driving only three wheels these days
But my dear, how about you?
I'm going slightly mad
I'm going slightly mad
It finally happened
It finally happened, oh yes
It finally happened
I'm slightly mad
Just very slightly mad
And there you have it

Although the accompanying music video appears to project the song as being very humorous and light-hearted, many people believe that the eerie keyboards and bleak lyrics reflect darker undertones, inspired by AIDS-induced dementia. Actress Cleo Rocos has confirmed this notion, stating that Mercury had explained to her and mutual friend Kenny Everett that the song documents the tragic mental decline he suffered during the final years of his life.
The single cover was inspired by a Grandville illustration (as are the others from the album).
The accompanying video is one of Queen's most famous, along with Bohemian Rhapsody and I Want to Break Free.
The video - like all other Innuendo videos directed by Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher of DoRo Productions - also features the band dressed and acting in very absurd ways, including but not limited to guitarist Brian May dressed as a penguin, drummer Roger Taylor wearing a tea kettle on his head, a man in a gorilla suit, who was later revealed to be Elton John, bassist John Deacon as a jester, and Mercury wearing a bunch of bananas as a wig (corresponding with the line "I think I'm a banana tree").
In interviews Brian May has said that it was (with These Are the Days of Our Lives) the last video Mercury shot and that he was already very ill at the time, although Mercury is very mobile in the video. This was not the case in the video for These Are the Days of Our Lives, where Mercury hardly moves around at all.
At the end of the video, the stairs on which John Deacon is standing disappear, as does John Deacon as well, leaving nothing but the jester hat left, as the video fades out.

It´s fantastic to watch Freddie display a healthy sense of humor during an exhausting battle for his life. He was not only a great artist, but also a very brave man.

@Sara Rodriguez this song conveys light madness which frees us from antidepressants. Well said Sara...the vidéo and the final notes conveys gentle delerium. A plague to be in Freddie s shoes. He should be with us for god s sake if the latter is more than a math formula before the Big Bang 💥
You see I m going slightly mad...

@Jan V thanks for your considerate response praising Sire Mercury, rest assured that I will live by him till my death thanks to youtube, archives, his childhood, various succesfull studies , 1st performances as a teenaged boy, artistic skills, warmth, generosity towards his wife then compagnons...humility...Band Aids his peak....Those who point out his use of drugs cannot be in his shoes. "Under pressure " what a meaningful vidéo ....the show must go on with him....no translator. Greetings from France

@Laurence Gerbore Freddie Mercury was so brave and hardworker for music of QUEEN since he was so young & not even well knowed for his magical talent until he was so sick. All my respects for the greatest performer ever, the greatest frontman and lovely artist he was right til the end.

@Chris Jordan plus David Bowie and some others. According to our sensitivities of course...

You couldn't ask for a better Freddie Mercury than what he gave us in this video. Just months away from death, what does he do? He steps up and goes slightly mad, which ends up giving us one of his greatest performances.
Thank you, Queen.

Freddie was good at everything, singing, playing the piano and the guitar, riding his bicycle and even being a banana tree. God he was so talented.
