Human Nature
Quincy Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looking out
Across the nighttime
The city winks a sleepless eye
Hear her voice
Shake my window
Sweet seducing sighs

Get me out
Into the nighttime
Four walls won't hold me tonight
If this town
Is just an apple
Then let me take a bite

If they say,
Why, why, tell 'em that it's human nature
Why, why, does he do it that way
If they say,
Why, why, tell 'em that it's human nature
Why, why does he do me that way

Reaching out
To touch a stranger
Electric eyes are everywhere
See that girl
She knows I'm watching
She likes the way I stare

If they say,
Why, why, tell 'em that it's human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
If they say,
Why, why, tell 'em that it's human nature
Why, why does he do me that way

I like livin' this way
I like lovin' this way

(That way) Why why
(That way) Why why

Looking out
Across the morning
Where the city's heart begins to beat
Reaching out
I touch her shoulder
I'm dreaming of the street

If they say,
Why, why, tell 'em that it's human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
If they say,
Why, why, ooo tell 'em
Why, why does he do me that way
If they say why, why, cha cha cha cha cha cha
Why does he do me that way
If they say why, why, why, ooo tell 'em
Why does he do me that way
If they say why, ooo tell 'em
Why does he do me that way
If they say why, da da da da da da da da

Why does he do my that way, I like living this way
Why, oh why, why, why

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Quincy Jones feat. Michael Jackson's song "Human Nature" describe a feeling of restlessness and the desire for something more. Jackson's voice smoothly floats over Jones' production, creating a dreamy atmosphere. The opening lines set the scene with Jackson looking out across the nighttime and the city winking a sleepless eye. The second verse finds Jackson looking to escape, singing that four walls won't hold him tonight. He desires adventure and excitement, comparing the town to an apple that he wants to take a bite out of.

The chorus is a response to those who may question his actions or desires. If they say "why, why," Jackson answers that it's human nature to want more, to seek excitement and adventure. He likes living and loving this way, and he won't be deterred by those who don't understand. In the final verse, Jackson is reaching out to touch a stranger, and the electric eyes of the city are everywhere. He's dreaming of the streets, and if anyone questions why he's living and loving this way, he'll just answer again that it's human nature.

Overall, "Human Nature" is a song about the excitement and restlessness of life, about not being content with sitting still and always wanting more. Jackson's voice delivers the lyrics with a smoothness and clarity that perfectly complement the dreamlike quality of Jones' production.

Being an audio engineer I can shed a bit of light on whats happening here. In concerts like this there'll be a complex system of digital or analog splits to make sure the audio is going everywhere it needs to (house, monitors, broadcast, recording). Sometimes, especially when digital networks like dante are involved these splits don't always work perfectly. I'm virtually certain whats happened here is that the broadcast engineer, who’s mixing what we’re hearing, (at least for the first minute or so) doesn't have the vocal microphone patched to their desk. What you're hearing is the vocal being fed in from the ambient microphones out in the audience, picking it up from the main PA in the room (as the desk mixing for the audience has it connected). I've no idea who the engineer is but I'd say he/she did a fantastic job, the rest of the mix sounds beautiful, they did as good a job as could have been expected without the main vocal feed, and the system techs got it patched quickly. Everyone slating the engineer is jumping to a simple but wrong conclusion

Thanks for the detailed explanation of what goes on behind the scenes. We usually take it for granted all we see is a finished product forgetting that it takes a team to make something this phenomenal to work 👏

who cares ...?

@Wolfgang Schnermann Obviously the 500 and 350 people that liked the comments saying the mix was poop. And us sound technicians cant argue with imbeciles that dont get what is going on. And somehow we have to let out the truth?

Wolfgang Schnermann

@Guni Who cares what other people think, baby ;)

Well put Gavin, I think it ended up sounding terrific after they caught the original problem.

This has always been my favorite Michael Jackson song. What Jacob has done here is brilliant. I love it just as much as the original.

Great art never dies. Michael would be so proud :) This is beautiful.

It really and truly is and it turns the song into something new which means the song lives on far beyond its creator which is THE reason for any song.
