What About Love
Quincy Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't know what love is
Until you've learned the meaning of the blues
Until you've loved the love you've had to lose
You don't know what love is
You don't know how lips hurt
Until you've kissed and had to pay the cost
Until you've flipped your heart and you have lost
You don't know what love is

Do you know how a lost heart feels
The thought of reminiscing
And how lips lips that taste of tears
They lose their taste for kissing
You don't know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don't know what love is

Do you know how a lost heart feels
The thought of reminiscing
And how lips lips that taste of tears
They lose their taste for kissing
You don't know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies

Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don't know what love is

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "What About Love" by Quincy Jones reflect on the pain and heartache that come along with true love. The first few lines depict the idea that love cannot be understood until one has experienced its loss. The blues is a style of music that is often associated with heartbreak and sadness, and the meaning of the blues is explored here through the lens of love. The subsequent lines focus on the physical and emotional pain of love. Lips that hurt and hearts that burn are symbolic of the agony of love that transcends beyond physical sensations. The line "Until you've flipped your heart and you have lost" is a powerful metaphor for the vulnerability and risk involved in loving someone.

The chorus of the song reiterates the idea that love involves a lot of sacrifice and pain. The words "Do you know how a lost heart feels?" bring to mind the feeling of emptiness and despair that comes along with a broken heart. Lips that taste of tears symbolize the sorrow that follows losing something that was once so precious. The lyric "You don't know how hearts burn for love that cannot live yet never dies" acknowledges that love can be heartbreaking yet never completely disappears. The song's lyrics speak to the deep emotional impact that love can have on an individual, leaving them with sleepless nights and a heart full of pain.

My father and mother (both RIP) had me listening to music from birth. Quincy among many others were huge influences on me musically. I could hum all of the parts and solos since I can remember. Now I am a jazz saxophonist who is so grateful for the roots. Just simply love this song.
