Monkeyland
Rabia Sorda Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I`m just walking down the streets of monkeyland
walking down the streets I find you
I`m just walking down the streets of monkeyland
Jump when I tell you to jump
don`t you hear me? Come and drag me out
jump when I tell you to jump
I thought it was a dream but I see monkeys
play around the streets
I thought it was a dream but I see monkeys
hanging from the trees
Asylum, don`t you want to play?
in this monkeyland quit fighting
don`t you want to stay? in this lovely insane
Asylum
Left to your own devices
come and drag me out
left to your own devices
would you drag me out?
Too many things to destroy, keep eating
bananas, don`t you try to drag me in again
too many things to destroy, all this voices
annoy, i don`t care, drag me out now!
The lyrics of Rabia Sorda’s “Monkeyland” is a commentary on society and how it is like a jungle where people are like monkeys. The singer feels like he is walking down the streets of Monkeyland when he sees people following the rules of the society like they are just animals. He then calls out to them to jump when he tells them but they don’t listen, indicating how the society is always busy with their own lives and doesn't care about what's happening around them.
The singer then reflects on how he thought it was just a dream, but he sees monkeys hanging from the trees and playing around the streets, symbolizing how society has become animalistic in the way they behave. The word “asylum” is used to show that society is a place where one has to be insane to survive, and the singer sarcastically says, “Don’t you want to stay in this lovely insane asylum?”
In the last verse, the singer portrays himself as an outsider who doesn’t fit in with the society, and he is asking to be dragged out of it. The society is too destructive, with too many voices that annoy him. He knows that he is different from the people around him and doesn't want to become like them.
