Rach three Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We met before
Sunrise could light us
Only
Morning moon could see
We'll have to
We'll have to rise against this sun
Or hide
Down to the sea
We'll have to flee this sun
You and me
We don't need anymore summer light
We may be strong enough to be
We also may fade with summer
Only time could see
Our love
It may be strong enough to be

It won't be strong enough to be

So I should
I should have locked us inside
And I should
I should have blinded all the windows
And I should
I should have turned off all lights
So
We never get caught by this sky
And so
This light never ends the night
And finally we get caught by this sky
It was easy for the light
To read inside our hearts

That's why
We decided to part

Overall Meaning

In the fourth movement of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto, the lyrics depict a relationship that seems to be fleeting, fragile, and ultimately doomed. The singer reflects on a past love that occurred before the break of dawn, suggesting a sense of secrecy and intimacy shared only under the moon's watchful gaze. The imagery of sunrise and the sun symbolize a harsh reality that threatens to expose their love and force them to face the consequences.

As the lyrics unfold, there is a sense of inevitability and resignation in the face of this impending challenge. The couple considers their options - to either confront the harsh light of day and risk being exposed, or to retreat and hide away from the world, particularly down to the sea. Faced with the choice of confronting the truth or escaping from it, they contemplate the strength of their love and whether it can withstand the harsh light of reality.

Despite their desire to remain hidden and preserve their love in darkness, the singer acknowledges the inevitability of being discovered by the light. There is a sense of regret and longing in the verses where the singer considers what could have been done differently to protect their love from being exposed and ultimately coming to an end. The imagery of locking themselves inside, blocking out the light, and erasing all traces of their love suggests a desperate attempt to preserve what they have.

In the final moments of the lyrics, there is a poignant acknowledgment of the power of light to reveal the true nature of their hearts and the inevitability of their parting. The decision to part ways is depicted as a necessary consequence of the light penetrating their innermost feelings and exposing the fragility of their love. The theme of inevitability, regret, and the bittersweet acceptance of the end of a once-powerful love is beautifully captured in these haunting lyrics, reflecting the emotional depth and complexity of Rachmaninoff's music in this melancholic movement.

The marvelous pianist tells a story. A magician or perhaps a court jester is up to usual tricks. He becomes sentimental, almost romantic in his persuasion to win the spectators, but the old magic wins again. That is the abrupt fate Polichinelle is accustomed to.
Thank you a wonderful performance.

@dap4699

Is that an interpretation of your own or you got this from any source?

And by "pianist" I guess you mean the performer of the video, right?

In the mid 60's I was a 12 year pianist, 6ft. 2" with large hands.
I was fortunate to take lessons one summer with Olga Conus at Cincinnati College Conservatory. Madame and her much older husband, Leon had been great friends with Rachmaninov before they fled to Paris.
She was very encouraged by the way I played but said I was not telling the story.
It seems Russian composers, particularly of the Tchaikovsky era would sketch a story to their melodic ideas. That is how they constructed from not only in tone-poems but in concertos.symphonies --and yes, solo piano pieces.

@@stevehinnenkamp5625 hi again. Just wanted to remind you that I am interested with your anecdote. If you feel like continuing, please do so.

@stevehinnenkamp5625

The court jester makes an abrasive entrance not objected to by royalty. That is why Rachmaninoff burlesque the pompous fanfares each time in a cruder way.
After an instant infatuation with a noble lady, Polichinelle reluctantly must fulfill his job of amusing his noble benefactors. His entrance motif is inverted (G to F Sharp). He abruptly vanishes from the royals as quick as he appeared compelled by disdain.
