Papillon
Radar Bros. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello weak butterfly in my arms
You traveled so far to die in my arms

School's out today, and the spring air is still
You move like a riverboat through the thick, brushy hills
Timed like a lung
You expand
You deflate

In the hot night
Crows fight beetles in the firelight

Hello weak waterfall in my arms
You traveled so long to die in my arms

You land in the river
But the river is a river
No more like an overturned ferry
You sink to the floor
You're an apple in the weeds
You're a glowing green eye

School's out today, and the fires won't go out

I'd love to come over, but the wind's blowing south
But while we've been sleeping, the bushes are burning

Overall Meaning

The song Papillon by Radar Bros. opens with the imagery of a weak butterfly in the singer’s arms, having traveled a great distance to die. The butterfly is compared to a riverboat navigating through the thick, bushy hills. The butterfly’s fragile physical state is compared to its timed breathing in which it expands and deflates. The second verse describes a waterfall held in the arms of the singer, having also traveled a great distance to die. The waterfall is said to land in the river, but the river is now just a river, no longer the overturned ferry it once was. The falling waterfall is compared to an apple in the weeds and a glowing green eye. The song continues with violent images of crows fighting beetles in the firelight and burning bushes in the night.

The lyrics of this song don't have a clear meaning, as they are made up of seemingly unrelated images, but they create a vivid picture in the listener's mind through the use of strong visual metaphors. The song's title "Papillon" means "butterfly" in French and could refer to the idea of transformation, as the butterfly metaphor suggests change and movement. The song could be interpreted as a reflection on the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death. The use of violent imagery could represent the tumultuousness of life and the struggle to survive in a harsh world.

Man Of The Year

Saw these guys opening for a band called Black Heart Procession in early 2000. I fell into a trance listening to every song. While everyone was talking I was zoned out to their music. I bought their album and left after they played. I had no need for Black heart procession (Good band though)
