Do You Even Know
Rae Morris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blow away, in time,
it's hard to see yourself in the corner
I gather reasons why,
try to justify what i taught her
Did you love,
did you love someone?
To the bitter end,
when the love couldn't come
And you want to leave, where you came from
And cast your heart
and mind to the ocean

Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know me at all?

It's brave to seek sometimes,
but i'm not brave enough to get over
The many miles i've run,
have only put more weight
on my shoulders

When i loved,
when i loved someone
To the bitter end,
When the love couldn't come
I just want to leave,
where we came from
And cast my heart and mind to the ocean

Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know me at all?

Head-tied,
over what we're doing
My mind,
wasn't built for this

Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know that,
i keep everything in?
Do you even know that,

i keep everything in?
Do you even know me at all?

Overall Meaning

In "Do You Even Know," Rae Morris sings about feeling lost and trapped, trying to justify the love that she gave someone as she reflects on a past relationship. The opening lines paint a picture of being stuck in a corner, unable to see oneself clearly. Morris is asking if her love meant anything to the other person, if they loved her back at all. The bitterness of giving love to someone and not receiving it back is captured in the line, "when the love couldn't come."

Morris seems to be struggling with vulnerability and expressing herself, as represented by the repetition of the line "Do you even know that, I keep everything in?" The last lines of the song, "My mind wasn’t built for this. Do you even know me at all?" shows that despite wanting to open up, it's challenging for Morris to reveal her true self to others.

Overall, the song speaks to the struggle of being vulnerable and opening up to others. Morris clearly yearns to be able to express herself but finds it challenging to do so.
