At the age of eight, American-born Ragani met the legendary yoga master, Sri Swami Rama, founder of the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, and former Shankaracharya of India. Under his tutelage, she was trained in yoga, meditation, and South Asian music, including kirtan.
Currently based in Milwaukee, and named in OnMilwaukee.com’s “100 Milwaukeeans You Need to Know”, Ragani has been featured on FOX and NBC affiliates and in numerous regional, national, and international publications, and she was featured in a kirtan documentary movie. In addition, Ragani is the featured model for the award-winning book, Yoga: Mastering the Basics, and its two accompanying videos.
Ragani’s kirtan recordings feature lush vocals, rich instrumentation, and the sacred mantras of India. Her songs “[bring] to mind a winning collaboration between Enya and the sadly departed George Harrison.” (Conscious Choice Magazine) Ragani's latest release, Ancient Spirit (Kirtan Café, Vol. II), landed itself as the “Top Pick” album with music distributors, was awarded “Runner Up” in the Best Production category of the International Music Aid awards, and was named “Best of the Year” (2006) by BackRoads Music.

The lyrics to Ragani's song Light Within open with the traditional Hindu prayer to gurus, Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu, which acknowledges the spiritual guru as a guiding presence in our lives. The prayer recognizes the guru as the creator, the sustainer, and the destroyer of life, representing the divine presence within oneself. The mantra expresses gratitude and respect towards the guru, acknowledging that they play a vital role in helping us find our inner light and spiritual purpose.
The second part of the lyrics, Asato Ma Sad Gamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya, Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya, serves as a prayer for enlightenment, peace, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The lines ask for guidance in transcending the material world and darkness of ignorance, leading us towards the light of truth and immortality.
Overall, Ragani's Light Within encourages listeners to explore their spiritual journey and seek guidance from spiritual leaders, gurus, or teachers. The song highlights the importance of finding one's inner light and guides us towards enlightenment, inner peace, and transformation.
