DeVaughn's musical story began with his mother's vinyl collection. "I always loved music so I would sneak into her record collection when she wasn't around and play her stuff." DeVaughn's father, noted jazz musician Abdul Wadud was also an influence. DeVaughn knew at an early age that he would become an entertainer.
DeVaughn graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland; then headed to nearby Coppin State. It was the first day of college that changed the course of his life. "I saw a group of guys standing outside singing, Boyz II Men style," remembers DeVaughn. "I just went up there and started harmonizing with them. Before I knew what was going on, I was in a group, cutting class to write lyrics and record." After winning $2,000.00 in a talent show at Bar None, a Washington D.C. nightclub, DeVaughn decided to go for broke and invested all of his winnings into a CD burner. Several independent releases led to a showcase with Jive Records, and the career was on it's way.
Can We Try Again
Raheem DeVaughn Lyrics

In the heat of.... Passion
(sigh)
I wish that love was easy and ever... Lasting
Maybe you just love to hard
Maybe I just love to free
But when you jumped ship baby
You took a piece of me
So somehow maybe someway
You can see past my I'm perfections
And i can just love you for who you are
If time heals all wounds
Am hoping you will come around soon
Maybe... We can try again
The lyrics of Raheem DeVaughn's song Can We Try Again is a reflection of a failed relationship between two people who loved each other. The song is about the hope that two people have when they realize their love is worth fighting for, even though they have gone through tough times. The first verse starts with the singer reminiscing about how his name used to easily roll off his lover's tongue in the heat of passion. He wishes love was ever-lasting and that they could work things out. However, he acknowledges that maybe his lover loved too hard, and he possibly loved too freely, which caused a rift in their relationship. The chorus expresses hope for a future where they can try again and the time can heal their wounds.
The second verse of the song continues with the theme of hope for redemption in the relationship. The singer believes that Rome wasn't built in a day, which means that some things take time. He is hopeful that his lover can see past his imperfections, and he can love her for who she is. He hopes for the day when the wounds inflicted by past mistakes can heal, and they can start again. The singer concludes the song with the belief that time can do wonders, and he hopes that his lover will come around soon so that they can have a fresh start and try again.
Overall, Can We Try Again is a song about hope, redemption, and the possibility of a second chance in a failed relationship.
