Rats In The Hallway
Rancid (USA) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Knock knock
Come in
You want to fight
I'm gonna win
I'll take you out
In a minute
Step in my flat
See what's in it

I live in the land of welfare state
My flat used to be section eight
Now it's a rat infested cocaine run
My whole worlds plays like a broken drum

Drunken bum
Yeah yeah yeah
Rats in the hallway again

Get up get out go ahead and ride away
Sit up our bed up your bed to lay
Kick up our rip up this place apart
Even when I'm finished I'm back at the start I'm out of line
At Adeline St. heat don't keep the crooked beat four am
No waves breaking what's left of the pm the am has taken

Drunken bum
Yeah yeah yeah
Rats in the hallway again

Outside my gate my crew is drinking a forty
Oz the asked my if there's still rats in the hallway
I said somethings ain't like the weather
They never change for the better
This girl came up to me she said she would do me no harm
Rolled up her sleeve and shoved me the tracks on her arm
I said what's your name she said Mya
She said Tim, want to take you higher

Junkie drunken
Yeah yeah yeah
Rats in the hallway again

Zombie walking kid out on his own with no morals
Mr. High leaves the body in comes mr withdrawal
Pain is the only thing the body will alow
The kid wants to dance the gangsters knows how

Johnny bought some shit down on market
Street shoot up boot up the human target
He hit the dirty spike when he hit the scene
It's easy to stay dirty when nothing is clean johnny´s a writer

Who tags up jackel jackel just clamped on unclampable shackels
Rout up shoot up some dope to go
Like legal currency it's money it's like that
Rat tat tat kid got shot point blank in the back my land lord said
Not to be bumming he was on cocaine stoop and he had it coming he had it coming?
He was only twelve years old he was in the blizzard he got shot for being cold
It don't seem right tonight hit the lights alright
Watch the roaches run into the darkest room

[Repeat x2]
Drunken bum

Yeah yeah yeah
Rats in the hallway again

Overall Meaning

The song "Rats In The Hallway" by Rancid (USA) is a fast-paced punk rock track that seems to describe a troubled living situation. The first verse starts with somebody knocking on the singer's door, asking to fight, but the singer is confident they will win. They let the person in and show them their flat, which is infested with rats and cocaine. The song is full of references to addiction, poverty, and brokenness, with descriptions of drunken bums, junkies, and gangs. The song tells the story of a community that is struggling to survive, where rats in the hallway are just a small part of a bigger problem.

The lyrics of this song are very powerful and paint a vivid picture of a world full of pain and desperation. The singer seems to be describing their own life, but also the lives of those around them. They live in a world where there is no hope, no escape, and no future. The message of the song is clear: something needs to change. The solution might not be obvious, but at least acknowledging the problem is a step in the right direction.

Has sin Abd

This is the longest I’ve seen Tim actually playing

expletive_deleted

@Garrett Steven Haha, yeah, I hear ya, and I agree. It's just weird when people think that he just can't play.

Garrett Steven

@expletive_deleted I just remember seeing them live wondering why tim didn’t just focus and play simple riffs like the beginning to Olympia WA he just kind of half played them it was a little strange. No doubt the guy can shred I just was surprised when he choose not to (?) play them

expletive_deleted

@Garrett Steven Well tbh, even their stuff after Lars joined as a second guitar doesn't really need two guitars live. They're never really doing anything too different from each other except for a few things here and there so they don't lose too much of the song even if Tim doesn't play at all. That's what it seems like to me at least.

Garrett Steven

@expletive_deleted why doesn’t he play live anymore it’s hard not to think that lol

Matt Simpkins skateboarding

@Raul Penutim is an awesome guitar player!

The trails are calling.

One of my favourite acoustic songs.

Excellent version of this Rancid classic

"He had it coming? He was only twelve years old-
The kid's in a blizzard, he got shot for being cold."

Some lyrics are so different in that soft voice.
