Ruby Soho
Rancid (USA) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Echoes of reggae comin' through my bedroom wall
Havin' a party up next door but I'm sittin' here all alone
Two lovers in the bedroom and the other starts to shout,
All I got is this blank stare and that don't carry no clout at all

Destination unknown
Ruby ruby ruby Ruby Soho
Destination unknown
Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby Soho

He's singin and she's there to lend a hand
He's seen his name on the marquee but she will never understand
Once again he's leavin' and she's there with a tear in her eye
Embraces with a warm gesture it's time, time to say goodbye

Destination unknown
Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby Soho
Destination unknown
Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby Soho

Ruby's heart ain't beatin' 'cause she knows the feelin' is gone,
She's not the only one who knew there's somethin' wrong
Little lover's in the distance as she wipes a tear from her eye,
Ruby's fading out, she disappears, it's time, time to say goodbye

Destination unknown
Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby Soho
Destination unknown

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rancid's song "Ruby Soho" paint a picture of a man sitting alone in his bedroom, listening to the music of his neighbors' party through the wall. As he sits there, he can hear two lovers arguing in the next room, but he is powerless to help. The chorus of the song features the refrain "Destination unknown, Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby Soho," which seems to suggest that the singer doesn't know where life is taking him, but he can't help but think about a woman named Ruby Soho.

In the second verse, we learn that the man in the song is a musician who has seen his name on a marquee, but the woman he loves doesn't understand his dreams. He's leaving her, and she's crying as he says his goodbyes. The final verse describes Ruby Soho's own heartache as she realizes that her relationship is over. The song ends with a repeat of the chorus, emphasizing the uncertainty of the future.

Overall, "Ruby Soho" is a poignant song about love and loss, with lyrics that evoke a sense of longing and sadness. The use of simple, repetitive phrases like "Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby Soho" adds to the song's hypnotic quality, drawing the listener into the emotional landscape of the singer and his doomed romance.

10th grade, 1995. This super popular red-headed upperclassman cheerleader used to drive me home from school in her red VW Cabriolet blasting this song with the top down. She was the loveliest person ever, and I was by far the world's biggest dweeb--but as long as Rancid was blasting I felt as cool as her. I'll never forget you Charlotte!

Watching this tonight in memory of my mom who passed away last year. I took her to see Rancid, one of her favorite bands, at Roseland in NYC years before it was sold to a developer, ugh. I love and miss you mama. xoxoxo i will never forget you rocking out with me in the crowd.
