One Goodbye
Randall King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One good road straight and long
One good highway that goes on and on and on
Good and gone is what I wanna be tonight
One good road and one goodbye
One good rain, really comin' down
If you don't love me let it come and
Flood me til I down
What I need to wash me clean on outta sight
Is one good rain and one goodbye
If where I'm going looks like,
Where I've been then I might
Keep on driving til I
Outrun my headlights
Somewhere down the line
Someday I'm gonna find
One good reason not to cry
One good thing we almost had
Looking at you not looking at me only makes me sad
So on four good wheels
Cross one state line
I'll be gone with one goodbye
If where I'm going looks like,
Where I've been then I might
Keep on driving til I
Outrun my headlights
And somewhere down the line
Someplace I'm bound to find
One good reason not to cry
One good road straight and long
One good highway that goes on and on and on
Good and gone is what I wanna be tonight

One good road and one goodbye
One goodbye

Overall Meaning

The song "One Goodbye" by Randall King is about a man who is searching for a way to escape his heartbreak and start anew. The lyrics describe his desire for a long and straight road that goes on endlessly, with no end in sight. He wants to be "good and gone" tonight, and the only way he believes he can do this is with "one good road and one goodbye."

The lyrics also speak about the healing power of rain- "one good rain"- which he hopes will wash away his pain and allow him to start anew. The rain is almost seen as a purifier or a way of washing away his troubles, and he is hoping for that one good rain to come and help him move on.

The man is clearly in a lot of pain and is ready to leave it all behind- he doesn't care where he goes, as long as it is not where he has been before. He hopes to find a reason not to cry somewhere down the line but until then, he just wants to be gone with one goodbye- a way of starting again.

Overall, the song can be interpreted as a metaphor for moving on from heartbreak and looking for a new beginning, with the only things needed being a good road and the power of the rain.

Great to hear! I’m about the same age as George Strait and have been listening to him since day one. Thankfully now it sounds like there’ll be someone to fill his boots for my kids and grandkids. All the best Randall.

In the world of “real country music” this would certainly be a number 1 hit. It’s a shame country music radio has hijacked real country music and keeps the world from hearing great country music artists and songs like this. Great job Randall. You are the replacement for the legendary George Strait’
