Crawford first polished her craft at club gigs from Cincinnati to St. Tropez, but made her name in mid 1970s in New York, where she sang with jazzmen George Benson on his album "Big Man" 1975) and Cannonball Adderley.
She then led Jazz veterans The Crusaders on the transatlantic big hit "Street Life" (1979). Her follow up solo efforts included "'One Day I'll Fly Away" (1980, Grand Prize for Tokyo International Music Festival); "'You Might Need Somebody" (1981); and "'Rainy Night In Georgia" (1981); which all became soul standards. Secret Combination (1981) stayed on the Billboard album chart for 60 weeks, after which her profile dipped, despite a return to the Top 10 with "Almaz" in (1986).
Naked And True (1995) brought Crawford back to her roots: it included Benson's "Give Me The Night", and confirmed her soul heritage by featuring Funkadelicists Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and The Fred Wesley Horns. But she enjoyed her highest profile of the decade when rising starlet Shola Ama had a worldwide hit with a cover of " You Might Need Somebody" in 1997.
She still continues to make great R&B hits and performs on various Jazz Festivals around the world.

'Cause I have to have you
Say I’m dreaming
'Cause I wanna see this through
Say there’s no meaning to life
If I’m not with you
My love, my only love
'Cause it’s you
Who will always be my first love
It’s you
Who first showed me who I really was
In you
My soul has found the one
I’m searching for
It’s true, I adore you
Our love is like
A merry go round
Sometimes it’s up
Sometimes it’s down
Like the sun and the rain
Even good loves found the change
Boy, you should know
'Cause the love we have we shouldn’t let go
Now you can walk away
Go on without me
Or you can try to stay
And make this easy
Though it’s hard
If you really wanna be alone
It’s okay, okay
Our love is like
A merry go round
Sometimes it’s up
Sometimes it’s down
Like the sun and the rain
Even good loves found the change
Boy, you should know
'Cause the love we have we shouldn’t let go
It’s clear to see
Your heart belongs to me
I’ll always get by
With you in my life
Don’t you ever leave
Our love is like
A merry go round
Sometimes it’s up
Sometimes it’s down
Like the sun and the rain
Even good loves found the change
Boy, you should know
'Cause the love we have we shouldn’t let go
The lyrics of Randy Crawford's song "Merry Go Round" express a deep sentiment of love that the singer feels for her partner while acknowledging the difficulties that arise in any relationship. The lyrics convey the notion that true love has its ups and downs, but if both partners work hard and don't let go, the relationship will thrive. The song starts by addressing those who say that the singer's obsession with her partner is crazy or foolish. The singer is aware of the difficulties of relationships, but despite that, she wants the relationship to work out. She believes that her love for her partner is an essential part of her life and that without him, everything will lose its meaning. Here, the song builds on the idea that true love is the anchor in our chaotic lives.
The chorus affirms that the singer's partner is her first love, who revealed her true self to her. The metaphor of a "merry go round" presents the idea that relationships are full of ups and downs. Sometimes things are good, and everything feels perfect, while at other times, they face difficulties that cause problems. Despite these difficulties, the singer tells her partner that they should not let go of their love because it is challenging to find such love in life. The song concludes by expressing the singer's desire to make the relationship work, knowing that her heart belongs to her partner, and that she will always love him no matter what.
