I Told You So
Randy Travis Lyrics

Suppose I called you up tonight
And told you that I love you
And suppose I said I want to come back home
And suppose I cried and said I think I finally learned my lesson
And I'm tired of spending all my time alone

If I told you that I realized you're all I ever wanted
And it's killing me to be so far away
Would you tell my that you love me too
And would we cry together
Or would you simply laugh at me and say?

I told you so
Oh, I told you so
I told you some day you'd come crawling back
And asking me to take you in
I told you so
But you had to go
Now I've found somebody new
And you will never break my heart in two again

If I got down on my knees
And told you I was yours forever
Would you get down on yours too and take my hand?
Would we get that old-time feeling
Would we laugh and talk for hours
The way we did when our love first began?

Would you tell me that you've missed me too
And that you've been so lonely
And you've waited for the day that I returned?
And we'd live and love forever
And that I'm your one and only
Or would you say the tables finally turned?

Would you say I told you so
Oh, I told you so
I told you some day you'd come crawling back
And asking me to take you in
I told you so
But you had to go
Now I've found somebody new
And you will never break my heart in two again

Now I've found somebody new
And you will never break my heart in two again

Overall Meaning

The song "I Told You So" by Randy Travis is about regret and the consequences of failing to appreciate someone while they are still there. The song is written as a hypothetical conversation between two people in a failed relationship. The singer of the song asks the other person if they would take him back if he came back to her, begging for forgiveness. The other person then responds by saying that they have moved on and found someone else, and that they are happy now. The singer of the song then reflects on the wrongs he has done and how his actions have led to the end of their relationship.

The chorus of the song is the title phrase, "I told you so," which is repeated throughout the song. This phrase represents the other person's reaction to the singer's pleas for forgiveness. It suggests a sense of vindication, that the other person was right to move on and that they are better off without the singer. The song is a beautiful yet heartbreaking reflection on lost love, the importance of appreciating someone while they are still there, and the regret we feel when it's too late.

When I was married to my husband, after the kids were in bed, we'd lay on the couch and hold each other while Randy played on the stereo. Unfortunately, because of his infidelities, our marriage ended after 16 years together. Twelve years later he asked me to come back after serenading me with this song. Although it broke my heart, I had to say no. While I've long forgiven him for cheating, my heart will never forget that pain
