The Question Of Time
Rasputina Lyrics

Spoken:

Some time later in the future, near the end of time, a parallel universe devoid of any semblance of reality was found in the end not to be real.
Or at least, it was all... extremely unclear.

We had learned to say anything.
We called things the opposite of what they were.
Time was measured by progress but things were deteriorating so rapidly that one felt time was going backwards.
We owned neither the world nor time.
We know that now.

Space and time, some quantum gravity theorists say, are most likely an illusion. The philosopher Augustine famously argued 17,000 years ago that space and time are creatures of existence and the universe, born with it, not separately standing features of eternity.

"That's not the way the world really works anymore," the arrogant official argued. "We're an empire now, and when we act we create our own reality. And while you are studying that reality, judiciously as you will, we will act again, creating other new realities which you can study too, and that's how things will work out. We're history's actors, and you - all of you - will be left to just study what we're doing. People don't have the right or ability to define for themselves what's true."

He sees the future as something even more far-reaching.
"You have a choice. You can either create your own future, or you can become the victim of a future that someone else creates for you. By seizing the transformation opportunities we offer, you are seizing the opportunity to create your own future."

We don't have time today to cover simultaneousness, but we will be discussing wormholes: tunnels through space connecting distant points travelling in time, holes called Einstein-Rosen bridges and how gravity would slam them shut. When we went in one all we could hear was raging, crashing, thudding, and smashing from the flooded ruins of a campsite. Even this inordinately frightening experience, accurately predicted by the Man Above, was still frighteningly unclear.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Question of Time" by Rasputina are a commentary on the nature of time in a world that is constantly changing and becoming more complex. The spoken word sections that interrupt the music describe a future where reality is unclear, and where people have learned to say anything, calling things the opposite of what they are. Time is measured by progress but things are deteriorating so rapidly that time feels like it's going backwards. Despite claims of owning the world, the song suggests that humans don't actually own anything, including time.

The lyrics also reference the idea that space and time might be illusions, with some quantum gravity theorists suggesting that they are not separately standing features of eternity, but rather creatures of the universe born with it. The idea of creating your own reality is mentioned, with an arrogant official arguing that as an empire, they can act to create their own reality and those studying their actions will be left behind. Meanwhile, the song suggests that people have a choice - they can either create their own future or become the victim of someone else's future.

Overall, "The Question of Time" is a deeply philosophical song that questions our understanding of the world and our place in it. It suggests that time, like reality, is a complex and constantly shifting thing that we cannot fully understand.

Space and time, some quantum gravity theorists say, are most likely an illusion. The philosopher Augustine famously argued 17,000 years ago that space and time are creatures of existence and the universe, born with it, not separately standing features of eternity.
Quantum gravity experts speculate that space and time may not be actual entities, while Augustine posited that they are integral aspects of the universe rather than self-sustaining elements of eternity.

An egotistical official claims reality can be molded to suit our will, and that others must simply observe our actions as we create new realities. He believes people are not empowered to establish their own truths.

Individuals must determine whether they will take control of their own destiny or allow themselves to be subjected to the whims of others. By accepting the chance for transformation, they can shape their own path forward.

While there is not enough time to touch upon simultaneousness, wormholes - pathways through space that connect far-off points in time - will be the focus. These bridges, also known as Einstein-Rosen bridges, would be sealed by gravity. On our journey through a wormhole, we encountered deafening sounds of destruction emanating from a deluged campsite. Even though this unnerving experience was foretold by a divine power, it remained confounding.
