His music reflects his interest and love for a variety of music including Latin music, country, blues, jazz and vintage rock and roll.
He started playing bass guitar while in high school and was a member of a small band playing the high school dance circuit. That band was known alternately as The Boys, The Tom Boys, and The Basics with Malo sharing vocal duties with guitarist, Tommy Anthony. In 1990, he became the vocalist for the four-man band, The Mavericks, for whom he penned most of the songs. In the vein of his singing idol Roy Orbison, Malo's soaring tenor voice helped the band create a unique blend of traditional Country music and 1950's Rock 'n' Roll. Evolving to an eclectic blend of Latin rhythms, classic country, jazz, pop and western swing, the Mavericks became one of the top American bands of the 1990s. They were voted by the Academy of Country Music, "Top Vocal Group and "Top New Vocal Group" in 1994. They were voted "Vocal Group of the Year" by the Country Music Association in 1995. On the same year, they won a Grammy for "Best Country Performance by a Group or Duo" for the song "Here Comes the Rain" from the album "Music For All Occasions".In 1996, they won again "Vocal Group of the Year" by the Country Music Association. . And on the same year, in London, England, they were awarded " Best Live Performance By a Group", " Best Vocal Performance by an Artist"," Best Vocal Group of the Year" and " Best International Touring Artist of the Year" by CMA- Europe. In Ireland, 1996, they won " Best Group of the Year" by the Irish Country Music Association.

That she gave me on a night like this
Just a little taste of heaven's bliss
That I took away with me
Any time I see the stars above
She's the only one I'm thinking of
I don't know if you can call it love
She's the vision that I can't forget
(Brother you ain't seen nothing yet)
She's the only woman in my dream
(Things ain't always what they seem)
All I wanna do is hold her tight
(What you gonna do when she's out all night?)
I don't remember asking your advice
(Brother go ahead and roll the dice)
That's the trouble with a moonlight kiss
That she gave me on a night like this
Just a little taste of heaven's bliss
That I took away with me
Any time I see the stars above
She's the only one I'm thinking of
I don't know if you can call it love
But it's good enough for me
She's the lover that I won't regret
(Brother how much you wanna make a bet?)
Nothing you say is gonna bring me down
(You should hear the rumors going round)
She makes me feel like I'm the only one
(It won't be long before you're done)
Why you always gonna mess with me?
(Brother the truth shall set you free)
That's the trouble with a moonlight kiss
That she gave me on a night like this
Just a little taste of heaven's bliss
That I took away with me
Any time I see the stars above
She's the only one I'm thinking of
I don't know if you can call it love
But it's good enough for me
That's the trouble with a moonlight kiss
That she gave me on a night like this
Just a little taste of heaven's bliss
That I took away with me
Any time I see the stars above
She's the only one I'm thinking of
I don't know if you can call it love
But it's good enough for me
The song "Moonlight Kiss" by Raul Malo tells the story of a man who had a memorable kiss under the moonlight with a woman he's attracted to. The first verse describes the special kiss as a little taste of heaven’s bliss that he won't forget, implying that it had a profound impact on him. Throughout the song, the singer emphasizes his feelings for this woman, stating that she is the only one he is thinking of when he sees the stars above. The line "I don't know if you can call it love, but it's good enough for me" suggests that he is not entirely sure about his feelings, but whatever it is, he is content with it.
In the second verse, the singer mentions that the woman is the only one in his dreams and that she makes him feel like he is the only one, indicating that he has strong feelings for her. However, he also encounters doubt and negativity from others around him, who question his relationship and say negative things about her, but he chooses to ignore them and continue to focus on his feelings.
The song's chorus repeats several times, emphasizing the power of this "moonlight kiss" in the singer's life. Overall, the song conveys a nostalgic and romantic tone, emphasizing the importance of small moments of happiness in life.
