I Want You
Ray Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't want you to work all day
I don't want you to be true
I just want to make love to you
I don't want you to wash my clothes
I don't want you to keep my home
I don't want your money too
Well I can see by the way that you switch and walk
And I can tell by the way that you baby talk
And I know by the way that you treat your man
I want to love you baby, it's a cryin' shame
I don't want you to bake my bread
I don't want you to make my bed
I don't want you cause I'm sad and blue
I just want to make love to you
The lyrics to Ray Charles's song Anyway You Want To are from a male perspective and appear to be a conversation between him and his lover. In the first verse, he says he doesn't want his lover to be a slave or work all day, but wants to make love to her. He doesn't want her to be true, which could be interpreted as him not wanting her to have any expectations or attachment to him beyond sexual encounters. He repeats this sentiment in the second verse, saying he doesn't want her to clean, cook or give him money, he just wants to have sex with her.
The third verse continues with a description of the woman's physical attributes and behavior. He says he can see the way she walks and can tell by the way she talks that he wants her. He also mentions that he knows how she treats her man, suggesting that she may already be in a relationship. Despite this, he still wants to love her and be with her.
Overall, the lyrics to Anyway You Want To are simplistic and straightforward, but also somewhat objectifying. The singer is only interested in the physical aspect of the relationship and doesn't seem to care about his lover's feelings, desires or agency in the relationship.
