Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You see see Rider, see what you done done
see see Rider, you see what you done done
You see see Rider, you see what you done done
You done made me love you and now your man done come
My home is on the water, I don't like no land at all
Home's on the water and I don't like no land at all

My home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
I'd rather be dead than to stay here and be your dog
So you see see Rider, see what you done done
see see Rider, you see what you done done

You see see Rider, you see what you done done
You done made me love you and now your man done come

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Charles's song "C.C. Rider" tell the story of a man who has been betrayed by a woman he loved. The repeated line "see see Rider, you see what you done done" emphasizes the singer's anger and disappointment. He blames "Rider" for making him fall in love with her, only to have her man come and take her away from him. The singer goes on to describe how his home is on the water, and he despises land. He would rather die than stay with Rider and be her "dog." The lyrics convey a sense of heartbreak and betrayal, combined with the bitterness and anger of someone who feels that he has been wronged.

About 20 years ago my wife and I went to New Orleans for Mardi-Gras. We went to a place on Bourbon Street where the music was all Blues, (House of Blues). What an amazing experience. I asked the group if they knew See See Rider. They did and they played it for me. It was wonderul. It brought back memories of Ray Charles.

In Ray's autobiography, it says two versions of this song, C. C. Rider, exist: The original with just Ray doing it, and another (heard here) where some nameless entrepreneur laid on choral and organ tracks over Ray's original song.

Why don't I get these lyrics when I google this song. I have this version on my phone. Thought I was going crazy. Like I had a rare recording or something.

I love this song.

Does anyone know? Did they take his early recordings like this one & then overdub the background vocals/strings onto them? I have heard versions by Ray Charles without the background vocals.
