Roll With My Baby
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Went to see my sweetheart
Last night around about ten
She said, "Home sweet, Papa"
Squeeze me every now and then

I'll keep rolling with my baby
I'll keep rolling with my baby
I'll keep rolling with my baby
'Cause she's sweet that way

We went out to a movie
Stop in the very last row
We hadn't been there a good five minutes
Before she's ready to go

I had to roll with my baby
I had to roll with my baby
I had to roll with my baby
'Cause she's sweet that way

I've got a quarter, a nickel and a dime
Can't buy me no whiskey
I guess I'll have to settle for wine
And then I can

Roll with my baby
I know I can roll with my baby
I'm sure I can roll with my baby
'Cause she's sweet that way

She's such a sweet woman
I'll never let her go
'Cause deep down inside of me
Lord knows I love her so

I'll keep rolling with my baby
I'll keep rolling with my baby

I'll keep rolling with my baby
'Cause she's sweet that way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Roll With My Baby by Ray Charles depict the singer's deep love and appreciation for his significant other. The first stanza describes the singer's visit to his sweetheart late at night. She greets him with warmth and affection, which the singer reciprocates by assuring her that he will "keep rolling" with her. In the second stanza, the couple goes out for a movie, but the woman loses interest and wants to leave early. The singer again assures her that he will always be there to roll with her. The last stanza reinforces the singer's devotion to his partner and expresses his intention to never let her go.

The song's meaning goes beyond its literal interpretation. The phrase "roll with" could refer to going with the flow or adapting to situations, which is essential in relationships. The idea of being sweet and loving despite circumstances is also a central theme. The line about having only a quarter, a nickel, and a dime and settling for wine can be interpreted as the singer being content with what he has as long as he is with his sweetheart. Overall, Roll With My Baby is a heartfelt ode to love and commitment.

There was no scene that took Mash off the air. They elected to end the show. The final episode is one of the most watched in television history.

@ethanweeter2732

125 million people.

@johnrussell5592

Saw the video, popped in to say the exact same thing. It was a consensus of the cast, and they'd taken the same vote the season before, and reluctantly decided for that one last season.

I am a Brit, I live in the UK. MASH is one of the best comedy/dramas ever made. It may be old, But it is still better entertainment than "modern" comedy/dramas.
Mash will live forever.

@sarahhall738

It was on BBC2 on a Wednesday night at 9pm when I was growing up, I still remember the day and time and I am now in my 40s that's how much it's part of my memory.

@terencejay8845

Plus, in the UK we didn't have to suffer the laugh-track. When I saw a few episodes on a USA trip, it ruined it for me.

@Toastrackman

I'm from the UK too, and now in my 50s, This is definitely one of my favorite US comedies, it never gets old.

@dp-sr1fd

@@terencejay8845 Dead right there, I saw part of an episode with the canned laughter and it had lost all of it's impact. It trivialised the whole thing. I think the producers did not see just how good it was, and underestimated the intelligence of it's audience.

@terencejay8845

@@dp-sr1fd The story was that they put the laugh-track on for the USA because of the subject and they needed to reinforce that it was at heart a comedy. They left it off in the UK because they considered the Brits to be a 'more sophisticated audience.'

I came home from Vietnam the year MASH went on the air. Not the same war, but the same pain and suffering. Thanks to all the vets from all the wars.
