Noble played the piano but seldom did so with his orchestra. In a movie short from the 1940s featuring Ray Noble and Buddy Clark (one of his most popular band singers), Ray Noble is asked by the announcer to play one of his most popular hits. He sits down at the piano and plays "Goodnight Sweetheart" ("Goodnight sweetheart, 'til we meet tomorrow. Goodnight sweetheart, parting is such sorrow"). This is the song that once seemed to be played at the end of every high school and college prom, the end of every party featuring live music, and the last song played by a dance band to signal the end of the evening.
Although Noble was no singer, he did appear twice as an upper crust Englishmen on two of his more popular New York records, 1935's Top Hat and 1937's Slumming on Park Avenue.
Noble and Bowlly's 1934 recording of "Midnight, the Stars and You" was prominently featured on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining in 1980.

The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a king
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
The lyrics of Ray Noble's song "The Very Thought Of You" capture the essence of being deeply in love with someone. The opening lines describe the power that the mere thought of the person holds over the singer. They forget to do the little ordinary things that they normally would because their mind is consumed by thoughts of their beloved. The singer is living in a kind of daydream and is happy as a king. To them, the thought of their love is everything, despite it seeming foolish to others. The song brings to light the all-consuming nature of love and how it can affect one's daily life.
The second verse continues to describe the impact that this love has on the singer's life. They describe how slow the moments go when they are not near their love, and how they see their face in every flower and their eyes in stars above. This reinforces the idea that the person they love is always on their mind, even when they are not physically present. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea that the very thought of their beloved is enough to bring them joy and contentment.
Overall, "The Very Thought Of You" is a beautiful love song that captures the power of love and how it can consume one's mind and heart. The singer's deep devotion to their love is conveyed through the lyrics, making it a timeless classic.
