Death of Me
Red Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I should have seen those signs all around me
But I was comfortable inside these wounds
So go ahead and take another piece of me, now
While we all bow down to you

You tear me down
And then you pick me up
You take it all
And still it's not enough
You try to tell me
You can heal me
But I'm still bleeding
And you'll be the death of me

How can you end my affliction
If you're the sickness and I'm the cure'
Too long I've faked this addiction
Another sacrifice to make us pure

You tear me down
And then you pick me up
You take it all
And still it's not enough
You try to tell me
You can heal me
But I'm still bleeding
And you'll be the death of me

You tear me down
And then you pick me up
You take it all
And still it's not enough
You try to tell me
You can heal me
But I'm still bleeding
And you'll be the death of me

I won't forget
I cannot forget this
I won't forget
I'll never forget this
I won't forget
I cannot forget this
I won't forget
I'll never forget this

I won't forget
I cannot forget this
I won't forget
I'll never forget this
I won't forget
I cannot forget this
I won't forget
I'll never forget

You know I can never prove this solution
You aren't the one that I thought you were
And so I learn to embrace this illusion
The line that separates
It starts to blur

You tear me down
And then you pick me up
You take it all
And say it's not enough
You try to tell me
You can heal me
But I'm still bleeding
And you'll be the death of me
And you'll be the death of me

I will not forget

I cannot forget this
And you'll be the death of me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Death of Me" by Red (US) are about being in a toxic relationship with someone who tears you down and then tries to build you back up. The singer of the song recognizes the warning signs of their partner's manipulative behavior but is too comfortable in their own wounds to leave the relationship. They feel trapped and powerless as the other person takes pieces of them and it seems like they will never be enough to satisfy them. The chorus repeats the idea that the other person will be the death of the singer, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The second verse reveals that the singer has been faking an addiction to please their partner, sacrificing their own well-being to make the relationship work. They realize that their partner is not the cure they need to heal, but instead, they are the sickness that is keeping them trapped. Despite this realization, the singer finds it difficult to leave the relationship and instead learns to embrace the illusion that everything is okay. However, the line between reality and illusion starts to blur, indicating that the singer cannot continue living in this situation forever.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of desperation and powerlessness, emphasizing the destructive nature of toxic relationships. The singer is being pushed to their limits and may never be able to escape the other person's grasp.

Red may be a religious band, but their lyrics can have so much meaning to anyone. To me this song refers to my issues with anxiety and depression. Such a great song.

I dont wanna use my name

I don't mind that they're religious

memeasaurus rex

i had no idea they're a Christian band

UnHolyDiver

Lyrics are always secondary to the music anyway. That is why I only really pay attention to lyrics after a couple of listens later.

Mi NX

A lot of their music deals with themes that are pretty much universal, even if they approach it through the lens of their religious views. This song uses Christian imagery to illustrate what it's saying, but it seems to be about the spiral of depression that often comes from pursuing things that we know won't make us happy in the long run.

I'm not religious at all. Good religious art is still good art, though. In this case, it actually makes their message sound more personal. This is a feeling that they've had and interpreted through their own view of the world, not just them playing follow the leader.

Draycolic Origins

They have a lot of songs about self identity. This one is about holding 2 opposing thoughts, 1 right and 1 wrong, at the same time. Double Think.
