Under the Bridge
Red Hot Chili Peppers Lyrics
Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend
Is the city I live in, the city of angels
Lonely as I am, together we cry
I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
Well, I never worry, now that is a lie
I don't ever wanna feel
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
Yeah, yeah, yeah
It's hard to believe that there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe that I'm all alone
At least I have her love, the city, she loves me
Lonely as I am, together we cry
I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, no, no-no, yeah, yeah
Love me, I say, yeah yeah
One time
(Under the bridge downtown)
Is where I drew some blood
(Under the bridge downtown)
I could not get enough
(Under the bridge downtown)
Forgot about my love
(Under the bridge downtown)
I gave my life away
Yeah, yeah
Oh, no, no-no-no, yeah, yeah
Oh, no, I said, oh, yeah, yeah
Where I stay

"Under the Bridge" is a song by the American alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on March 10, 1992 as the second single from the group's fifth studio album Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Vocalist Anthony Kiedis wrote the lyrics to express his feelings of loneliness and despondency and to reflect on narcotics and their impact on his life.

Vocalist Anthony Kiedis wrote the lyrics to express his feelings of loneliness and despondency and to reflect on narcotics and their impact on his life.
During rehearsal in April 1991, Kiedis had felt distanced from bandmates Flea and Frusciante. His feeling of loneliness reminded him of his relationship with his former girlfriend, and the time of his heroin and cocaine addiction. His subsequent alienation spent wandering and hiking through L.A. made him feel that the spirit of the city was looking after him, like his only companion or friend.
Kiedis initially did not feel "Under the Bridge" would fit into the Chili Peppers' repertoire and was reluctant to show it to his band mates until producer Rick Rubin implored him to do so. The rest of the band was receptive to the lyrics and wrote the music.
The song became a critical and commercial success, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The single's success was widened with the release of its accompanying video, which was frequently played on music television channels. It won the "Viewer's Choice Award" and "Breakthrough Video" at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.
"Under the Bridge" allowed the Red Hot Chili Peppers to enter the mainstream. David Fricke of Rolling Stone said the song "unexpectedly drop-kicked the band into the Top 10",[1] while Philip Booth of The Tampa Tribune commented that it was a "pretty, undulating, [and] by-now omnipresent single."[2] Its success led in part to the departure of guitarist John Frusciante, who preferred the band to remain underground. The song has become an inspiration to other artists, and remains a seminal component of the alternative rock movement of the early- and mid-1990s.

I've heard this song hundreds of times. A few times as part of the album, some as part of a compilation, most on radio or in the background as the autoplay algorithm weaves it's serpentine way around my listening preferences.
Always been a bit lukewarm when it came to RHCP, but this popped up on autoplay a few nights ago as I was working - And I decided to listen to it, properly this time, and got the lyrics up in another window.
I'd half-remembered some ancient crumbs of conversations about music I'd had when I was younger, and being told that this was a song about drugs or addiction or something, and most likely I would have casually accepted that and dismissed it as having any interest to me or profundity, lyrically, and from that point it would have been subconsciously indexed as acceptable background noise, hearing the notes and not the words.
Anyway, I decided to listen to it, for real.
2:51 came and the intensity went up, and up, and up, and then I heard a choir of angels & mothers shrieking at the sight of a son letting go of his life, and floating off into oblivion, forever.
And with headphones cradling my skull, at close to 3am, in the silent darkness enveloping me, tears fell on to my kitchen table.
How can a person go for 30 years listening but not hearing? Well I didn't, until now.
I'm sure no one cares, but I just wanted to say, remarkable.
Beautiful, haunting, moving, sad, sincere...profound.
I was wrong.
This isn't lukewarm, it's red hot.
Thank you Anthony Kiedis & RHCP - Magical, masterful, marvellous.

I think it is all about loneliness, all kinds of them. Deep down the feeling is so cold and so 'filled' with emptyness.
Never been on drugs myself but loneliness/desolation has many faces.
