Worried Over You
Red Norvo and His Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But now I hear love call,
I'm getting sentimental over you
Things you say and do,
Just thrill me through and through,
I'm getting sentimental over you.
I could live without love
Now I must admit,
Love is all I'm thinking of
Won't you please be kind,
And just make up your mind
That you'll be sweet & gentle,
Be gentle with me
Because I'm sentimental over you
The lyrics to Red Norvo and His Orchestra's song "Worried Over You" express the sentiment of falling in love unexpectedly and becoming sentimental over that person. The first verse reveals the singer's surprise at falling in love and how they feel love calling out to them. The second verse dives deeper into the emotional intensity of the situation, where the singer is thrilled by everything their lover says and does, and they are gradually becoming more and more sentimental over them.
The third verse reveals a previous reluctance to love, but the singer has come to realize that they can't live without it. They are now thinking of love constantly and yearn for the affection of the one they love. Finally, the singer pleads with their lover to be gentle and kind to them, acknowledging their own sentimental nature and asking that they be treated accordingly.
One of the interesting facts about the song is that it was written by Ned Washington and George Bassman in 1935 and first recorded by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra. The song was a hit but it wasn't until Red Norvo and his Orchestra made their rendition in 1936 that the song became even more popular. The song would later become a jazz standard and has been covered by numerous artists including Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Mildred sang from the heart -- she herself said so and, even if she hadn't, it's plainly apparent. Here, she takes material that is fairly ordinary and makes of it something very meaningful -- and of course that unmistakable tone of hers is always a treat. Sauter's arrangement provides the perfect frame for both Mildred's chorus and the solos of the leader and clarinetist Hank D'Amico. Moe Purtill's brush work is lovely.
