Machines and Men
Reese Lansangan Lyrics

1990, our bodies were mighty
Practically brand new
Until 1992, we scraped our knees
Knocked off a tooth in 1994
From falling to the floor
We were climbing our trees
We pedaled fast on our bicycles
And we got our wounds from
Tumbling hard on the ground
As children, we were made to mess around
Back then our bodies were so restless
And our bones used to be kind
And our muscles seemed to be so strong
And our limbs were so connected
Neurons coursing through our minds
But our parts are getting in and going wrong
We were younger then
Now decaying machines and men
1998, our bodies were so, so great
And we rode our roller skates so well
Twisted an ankle to a frightening tumble
We called upon angels to fix this up
'Cause we swore to never tell
As we got older, we crashed a car
And we got our scars from our duel with death
Blood and bone and fainted breath
Back then our bodies were so restless
And our bones used to be kind
And our muscles, they seemed to be so strong
And our limbs were so connected
Neurons coursing through our minds
But our parts are getting in and going wrong
We were younger then
Now decaying machines and men
Men, men
Behold this sagging skin
And these fragile ribs that's caging in
My lungs and soul
Help me to get in if there's a heaven
'Cause it's better than this life I'm told
Every breath I'm struggling
And I can't remember how it felt not to be this old
Please just get me in if there's a heaven
And our bodies were so restless
And our bones used to be kind
And our muscles, they seemed to be so strong
And our limbs were so connected
Neurons coursing through our minds
But our parts are getting in and going wrong
We were younger then
Now decaying machines and men
Just that peek like locked in heads
Two blossoms worn in red
Machines and men
Knew this'd come, let this be said
Life hangs loosely by a thread
Just that peek like locked in heads
Two blossoms worn in red

The back rolls over, rest your head
Final hours far in bed

Overall Meaning

In Reese Lansangan's song Machines and Men, she mourns the aging process we all go through as humans. The lyrics recount the many physical milestones we had once attained, from falling off our bicycles in our younger years to harming ourselves in more serious endeavors as we aged. As children, our bodies were restless as our muscles, bones, and neurons worked in harmony to get us through the day. We have now become decaying machines and men whose components no longer work correctly. Reese speaks of the struggles of growing old in great detail, expressing the pain from our sagging skin and our fragile ribs that cage in our lungs and soul. Reese speaks of heaven as a place where the older and infirm can be free from our machine-like bodies.

VERSE I

1990, our bodies were mighty
Practically brand new
Until 1992, we scraped our knees

Knocked off a tooth in 1994,
From falling to the floor when we were climbing our trees
We pedalled fast on our bicycles
And we got our wounds from tumbling hard on the ground
As children, we were made to mess around

CHORUS

Back then, our bodies were so restless
And our bones used to be kind
And our muscles seemed to be so strong
And our limbs were so connected,
Neurons coursing through our minds
But our parts are giving in and going wrong
We were younger then, now decaying machines and men

VERSE II

1998, our bodies were so so great
And we rode our roller-skates so well
Twisted an ankle to a frightening angle
Called upon angels to fix us up
Cause we swore to never tell

And we got older, we crashed a car
And we got our scars from our duel with death
Blood and bone and bated breath

CHORUS

BRIDGE

Chests that peak like mountain heads
Buds to blossoms running red
Youth has come, let this be said
Life hangs loosely by a thread

Behold this sagging skin
And these fragile ribs that's caging in
My lungs and soul

Help me to get in
If there's a heaven
Cause it's better than this life, I'm told

Every breath, I'm struggling
And I can't remember how it felt
Not to be this old

Please just get me in, if there's a heaven

CHORUS

Outro:

Chests that peak like mountain heads
Buds to blossoms running red
Battle over, rest your head
Final hours fought in bed

This is one of my most favorite songs of Reese :') It's a song about the fragility of life and mortality and there's nothing more humbling, scarier and more beautiful than that. ❀❀ Keep doing what you do, Reese.
