You Go to My Head
Reeves Dianne Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two
The thrill of the thought that you might give a thought to my plea
Cast a spell over me
Can't you see that this never will be
You go to my head with a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head
The thrill of the thought that you might give a thought to my plea
Cast a spell over me
Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be
You go to my head with a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head
You go to my head
You go to my head
The lyrics of Reeves Dianne's song You Go to My Head describe the feeling of being deeply infatuated with someone to the extent that they start lingering in one's thoughts and occupying one's mind. The first stanza opens with the singer describing the person as a haunting refrain, a memory that stays with them, and they find themselves spinning around it like bubbles in a glass of champagne. The following lines continue the comparison, likening the person to a sip of sparkling burgundy, with their mention being the kicker in a julep. The second stanza expresses the thrill and excitement of just the thought of having the person interested in the singer. However, self-awareness kicks in, and the singer realizes that this romance is unlikely to happen. Despite it all, the person's effect on the singer persists, with their smile making their temperature rise and their eyes intoxicating their soul.
The lyrics, though simple, paint a vivid image of what it's like to be so obsessed with someone that they occupy one's thoughts and desires, much like the effect of champagne or alcohol on the mind. The comparison to seasonal temperatures, summer, and winter emphasize the intensity and fleeting nature of such desires, like one summer ending and falling into winter.

My favorite version of this tune. Diane's expressive voice makes the lyrics truly heartfelt. I love how Nicholas Payton fills in with beautiful chord melodies in the back of Diane's vocal. Peter Martin's piano accompaniment is sublime as always. While the tempo is slow, the rich melodic movements by the vocal and instruments lend the tune a beautiful tension that it deserves. Truly a masterpiece!!
