Poor Little Rich Boy
Regina Spektor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Poor little rich boy
All the couples have gone
You wish that they hadn't
You don't want to be alone
But they want to kiss
And they've got homes of their own
Poor little rich boy
All the couples have gone have gone have gone

And you don't love your girlfriend
You don't love your girlfriend
And you think that you should but she thinks that
She's fat but she isn't but you don't love her anyway
And you don't love your mother
And you know that you should
And you wish that you would but you don't anyway

Poor little rich boy
Oh the world is okay
The water runs off your skin
And down into the drain
You're reading Fitzgerald
You're reading Hemingway
They're both super smart
And drinking in the cafes

And you don't love your girlfriend
You don't love your girlfriend
And you think that you should but she thinks
That she's fat but she isn't but you don't love her anyway
And you don't love your mother
And you know that you should
And your wish that you would
But you don't anyway

You're so young

You're so god damn young
And you don't love your girlfriend

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Regina Spektor's song "Poor Little Rich Boy" are a commentary on the life of a wealthy and privileged young man who is struggling with feelings of loneliness and dissatisfaction despite his privileged status. The first verse describes the young man's isolation as all of his coupled friends have left him alone. Although he wishes they would stay, he is unable to connect with them and is left feeling alone. The repetition of the phrase "have gone" emphasizes the young man's loneliness and isolation.

In the second verse, the lyrics reveal that the young man is also struggling with romantic relationships. He does not love his girlfriend and feels guilty for not being able to feel affection towards her. The lyrics suggest that his girlfriend is insecure about her weight, but the young man is unable to convince himself to love her despite her perceived physical flaws. Additionally, the young man feels distant from his mother and wishes he could love her as he knows he should, but is unable to.

I've only "discovered" Regina Spektor's music a few weeks ago, I'm totally addicted, I've listened to this song 10x tonight, it is past 1-0-clock, I must get up in 4-hours, but I can't switch it off. Am I the only one who is addicted to her music, is there a place where I can get help? She is a musical genius?
