Ashes Are Burning
Renaissance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Travel the days of freedom
Roads leading everywhere
Come with me now and show how you care

Follow the dying embers
Cross on the paths that they lay
Breath of the past the earths yesterday
Clear your mind maybe you will find
That the past is still turning
Circles sway echo yesterday
Ashes burning ashes burning

Colours are fading starlight
Silver the way to find
Walking the shadows, there in our mind

Changing the order slowly
Leaving the mist of time
Fingers are holding fragments of mine

Clear your mind maybe you will find
That the past is still turning
Circles sway echo yesterday
Ashes burning ashes burning

Imagine the burning embers
They glow below and above
Your sins you won't remember
And all you'll find there is love
Ashes are burning brightly
The smoke can be seen from afar
So now you're seeing how far

Ashes are burning the way
Ashes are burning the way

Overall Meaning

The song "Ashes are Burning" by Renaissance is a poetic exploration of the cyclical nature of life and the power of memory to shape our understanding of the world. The opening lines of the song set the tone for this exploration with the invitation to "travel the days of freedom" and follow the "roads leading everywhere". This invokes a sense of wonder and possibility, inviting the listener to join the singer on a journey to discover the mysteries of the past and the present.

As the song progresses, the singer encourages the listener to "clear [their] mind" and embrace the changing order of things. The idea of "Breath of the past the earths yesterday" implies a connection between the natural world and the human experience of memory, suggesting that the two are intertwined and shape one another. The repeated refrain of "Ashes burning, ashes burning" evokes a sense of loss and transformation, symbolizing the way in which memories of the past are transformed by the passage of time.

The song also touches on the theme of love and forgiveness, suggesting that the process of remembering and letting go of the past is an essential part of healing and finding love. The imagery of the "burning embers" and the smoke "seen from afar" suggests a powerful catharsis, as if the singer and listener are burning away all of their regrets and struggles to make way for something new and beautiful.

One of the most underrated and under appreciated bands of all time....they are great!

I saw Annie sing this in Philadelphia one night. She came out with the long gown, and swayed to the music, and absolutely killed it. I swear to God, it put me on another planet. I was completely mesmerized, and I wasn't even high or tripping. There really are no words for her.

One of the best Renaissance songs. Annie Haslam is one of the best singers ever, she should be as popular as Freddie Mercury
