Island
Renaissance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is an island
Where it should never be
Surrounded by suburban sea
And through the tired and hopeless waves
To where it's free
I want to be there
For the rest of my time
There on the island
The sun is always bright
The moon sends the darkness away in the night
I know that it's waiting
I know there's a place ready for me
I want to be there
For the rest of my time
Warm sounds of windsongs
Come down through the trees
But far away tears are borne on the breeze
I'll follow the raindrops
Cause sunshine and smiles are waiting for me

I want to be there
For the rest of my time

Overall Meaning

The song "Island" by Renaissance is a whimsical story about the desire for a better life on an island far away from the chaos of the everyday world. It describes an island that shouldn't exist, surrounded by suburban sea, as a place of hope and freedom. The lyrics express the longing to leave the monotonous routine behind and seek solace on this island. The island is portrayed as a haven, where the sun is always shining brightly, and the moon is so powerful that it can dispel darkness from the night.

However, while the island represents freedom, the lyrics also suggest that painful emotions, like tears and despair, are not emotions that can be left behind. It is implied that the island is a place to escape from the world's negative experiences, but these emotions have a way of following us everywhere. Despite this, the desire to escape to the island remains. The soothing sounds of nature, like the wind and raindrops, get mentioned, creating a serene image of the tropical paradise.

In conclusion, "Island" theme is one that is relatable to many individuals who dream of finding a place of solace from the world's chaos. It encapsulates the yearning for an alternate life on an island, free from the worry and stress of daily life.

There is something about this song that sounds otherworldly. So stunning beautiful. RIP Keith. You were one of life's true originals 💫🎸

@mikemasail823

That is because it is lightly based on Beethoven's Pathetique 3rd movement

@groovy56

I always loved both versions of Renaissance, but never noticed till now how phenomenal this bass player is!

He went on later to join Keith relf in the group Armageddon

"There is an island
Where it should never be
Surrounded by suburban sea"

A wonderful song with lyrics typical of the late sixties. Jane Relf's voice is fragile but beautiful.
The original Renaissance band reformed as Illusion in the seventies. People who don't know Illusion should check their albums. Lots of gems to be found!

Louis Cennamo of Renaissance is a good bass player. I also hold his replacement, Jon Camp, in high regard as a bassist.

@splitnmelba

Keith Relf (on guitar here) and Jim McCarty (drums) ex Yardbirds. And Keith's sister Jane on vocals. Love this song. Good to play just on an acoustic guitar which is always a good test of song .

Amazing Classic...Rip Keith Relf
