The Sea
Renaissance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As much as I dreamed of it
You did not dream of me
And I would give so much
Just to be your enough
I still keep those shining rings
Close to my heart
It's the closest that you'll ever be
If I could be washed away
You could sail for days
And as you conquer the sea
I'd slowly lose what's left of me
We started to set sail
On the tides of eternity
Living in euphony
To the silk embrace of your eyes
But if I could be washed away
You could sail for days
And as you conquer the seas
I'd slowly lose
If I could be washed away
You could sail for days

And as you conquer the sea
I'd slowly lose what's left of me

Overall Meaning

, the lyrics of Renaissance's song "The Sea" are written in a poetic, introspective manner. Within the song, the sea is personified, holding out its "many hands" to the singer and taking them to places they want to be. The sea is a symbol of change and the unknown as the singer reflects on their dreams being many fathoms below, representing their deepest desires that have yet to be realized. Furthermore, the pattern of their life will ebb and flow like the tide, continually changing and bringing the hope that their loved one will remain by their side.

The reflection deepens as the singer turns away from the horizon, watching as the day comes to an end, listening to the sad call of the sea. The stars appear, and the singer ponders their future, wondering how they will be next year, with the tide bringing what is new. They hope that their loved one will remain a constant in their life. The moon, sometimes a symbol of sadness, serves to welcome joy and love, which highlights the duality of life.

The final section of the song is a reflection that despite the beauty of the world around us, sometimes what we need is obscured by the clouds. However, the sea is always awaiting the view. Like life, sometimes we must wait for the clouds to part, and we can see the beauty within and around us.

I discovered Renaissance in the early 80s. One of my alltime favorites, and then my daughter got into them too. My daughter could actually sing Annie Haslam's parts. We used to do "covers" (more like excerpts) at the open mic, I could sing the harmony. The best of all is that Annie Haslam came to Philly & we got to meet her!!!
