Autograph
Resurrection Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah.

I said, "Sign here please," and you inscribed your name in my heart,
Didn't know what I was getting into, or what was getting into me, for that matter,
A little slow to understand,
Love was the word I was after, so your name kept coming to my lips again and again,
Again and again.
Now I understand he wanted the heart of the world,
You're his signature, the very stamp of his soul,
Spirit in the wind,
Agony of the cross all told, signed in blood,
Signed in blood, ooh, yeah.

Forgery, it happens all the time,
Your truth ain't even on their minds,
Though it's written down in black and white, blood red,
Jesus is up from the dead,
I know that he's coming again.

Your autograph touching the heart of my world,
Your signature in me, the mark of your soul,
Spirit in my heart,
Crosses of love, my goal,
I want to be clear and bold, your autograph.

Your autograph touching the heart of my world,
Your autograph in me, the mark of your soul.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Resurrection Band's song Autograph tell the story of a person who is so overwhelmed and enamored with their love for another that they liken it to a signed autograph. They explain that when they first met the person they were infatuated with, they "inscribed their name" into their heart. The person didn't fully comprehend the depth of their love at first, but eventually realized that they were after love, and that the other person's name was constantly on their lips. The lyrics then shift to a discussion of Jesus and how he too inscribed his name into the hearts of his followers. The person singing is amazed by how Jesus wanted to capture the heart of the world, and that his signature is the very stamp of his soul. They explain that his spirit lives on and that his sacrifice on the cross is a testament to this.

The song is a powerful Christian rock anthem that speaks to the transformative power of love and faith. It uses the metaphor of an autograph to show the depth of the singer's love for Jesus, and how his signature is a mark on their very soul. The song has a strong message of faith and persistence, as the singer acknowledges that it can be easy to forget the truth and become lost in the world. However, they remind the listener that Jesus is up from the dead and that he will return again.

This opening cut was like a massive earthquake when it first came out. It was SO different from ANYTHING on the band's first two albums---I really didn't like it. But man, did I warm up to it over that next year. NOW, the intro to the song here, is probably my favorite composition by Rez, and the album is in my top 3 of all their albums.

@Rafael Aguiar Oh, don't get me wrong, I LOVE both full albums before this one. ("Awaiting Your Reply" and "Rainbow's End." Have 'em on original vinyl. I never did get the demo tapes before those.) But this album, "Colours," was just SO different! (Although I think some of the HARDEST stuff Rez did was on the albums at the end of their catalogue; stuff from both "Civil Rites" and "Lament".

their third also kicks ass man (the one before this one if you dont consider the first which were only demo k-7s...)

Dustin Bibler

Love the 2-min instrumental intro of this song.

Jerry Boone
