Empty Hearts
Resurrection Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He reached for the wire right out his back door,
Jumping from the fire escape off of his fourth floor,
His foot still touching, his hand caught fire,
Thirty thousand volts made his heartbeat a liar.

Nothing's worse than the dues to pay for an empty heart,
Nothing's worse than the dues to pay for an empty heart.
Empty hearts,
An empty heart will tear you apart,
Empty hearts,
An empty heart will tear you apart.

A scream in the night, dialling 911,
The shock of their lives, over and done,
She was alone in the crowd, shadow on the wall,
The ambulance left, taking it all,
They thought they had something with nothing to lose,
But in the morning light she knew the truth,
Nobody noticed, never asked for her name,
Just a face in the night gone up in flames.

Empty hearts.

He reached for the wire right out his back door,
Jumping from the fire escape off of his fourth floor,
She loved so much, they thought that they had it made,
But when the sun came up he never saw the light of day.

Nothing's worse than the dues to pay for an empty heart,
Nothing's worse than the dues to pay for an empty heart.

Empty hearts,
An empty heart will tear you apart,
Empty hearts,
An empty heart will tear you apart,
Empty hearts,
An empty heart will tear you apart,

Empty hearts,
An empty heart will tear you apart.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Resurrection Band's song "Empty Hearts" depict the tragic consequences of living with an empty heart. The first verse refers to a man who attempts suicide by touching a live wire. He is so consumed by despair and emptiness that he is willing to take his own life rather than suffer any longer. The line "thirty thousand volts made his heartbeat a liar" is a reference to the fact that even though his heart was still beating, it was as good as dead. The second verse describes a woman who is similarly alone and suffering. She calls 911 in a desperate attempt to reach out to someone, but ultimately she is left alone to face her pain.
