From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!
"Danny Boy" is a traditional Irish song that has captured the hearts of many people worldwide. The lyrics are melancholy and bittersweet, expressing the sorrow of separation between two lovers. The first verse begins with a haunting melody that sets the tone for the entire song. The pipes are symbols for the sounds of nature and the call of ancestral spirits. The phrase "from glen to glen, and down the mountain side" portrays the vast and beautiful landscape of Ireland. The second line references the end of summer and the falling of the roses, which signals the passing of time and the inevitability of change. The third line expresses the need for the beloved to depart and the sorrow that comes with it. The last line "It's you, it's you must go and I must bide" conveys the pain of separation and longing.
The second verse is an invitation to return. When summer comes around again, the singer wishes for their beloved to return. Or, they can return when the snow covers the valley in silence. The singer then promises to be there in sunshine or shadow, meaning that they will remain steadfast and true no matter what happens. The last line "Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!" shows the depth of the feelings the singer has for Danny.

Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
Danny, listen to the melancholic tune of the pipes that signifies a farewell
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The sound echoes throughout the glens and down the slopes of the mountains
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
The summer and its beautiful moments have come to an end and everything is withering away
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.
You need to leave while I have to stay behind
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Return when the meadows are lush and green in the summertime
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
Also return when the valley is quiet and covered in snow during winter
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
I will always be here for you, in good times and bad
Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!
Danny, I love you so much
But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
When you return and all the flowers have wilted away
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
In case I have died by then
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
You will go and locate my grave
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
Once you find my grave, you will kneel and say a prayer for my soul
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
Even in death, I will hear your footsteps above my grave
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
Knowing that you've come to visit me will bring warmth and comfort to my resting place
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
When you visit my grave, you will express your love for me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!
With the assurance of your love, I will rest in peace until we meet again

Ah, the RT Big Band! What a lineup! I especially love Simon's Kellogg's Corn Flakes guitar.

My God, this probably means that RT is responsible for all those German 'Celtic' bands that murder Irish folk songs at 100mph!
