Rick Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw three ships come sailing by
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day.
I saw three ships come sailing by
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And what was in those ships all three
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
And what was in those ships all three
On Christmas Day in the morning?

The Virgin Mary and Christ were there
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day.

The virgin Mary and Christ were there
On Christmas Day in the morning

Overall Meaning

.

In Rick Springfield's rendition of the traditional Christmas carol "I Saw Three Ships," he tells the story of spotting three ships sailing on Christmas Day. As he watches the ships glide by, he wonders what they might contain. The answer, in the traditional telling of the story, is the Virgin Mary, accompanied by the infant Jesus.

Arguably the most interesting aspect of Springfield's interpretation, however, is the way in which he imbues the carol with his signature rock n' roll sound. By adding a driving beat and distorted guitars, he gives the centuries-old tune a modern edge, helping to ensure that it remains relevant and exciting to contemporary audiences.
