Gervais achieved mainstream fame with his award-winning BBC2 television programme The Office, which he co-wrote and co-directed with long-time friend and collaborator Stephen Merchant. Besides writing and directing the show, Gervais played the lead role of David Brent.
In 2005, Gervais returned to BBC Television with his new sitcom, Extras.
He was one half of the pop duo, Seona Dancing, who had minor success in the early 80's.

We're criminals at large but I'm at larger than you
I'm number one, you're number two
I believe in the quality as long as you get less than me
I'm one. you're one, you're number two, I'm number two
You may think that you're smarter, but I'm smarter than you
I'm number one, you're number two
I can see by the look in your eye, you want to get a bigger piece of the pie
One day you'll get your chance, but in the mean time
You got to dance monkey dance
Really, I hate dancing
Do it! dance monkey dance, ha ha
I'm number two, he's number one
I can't believe I'm working for an amphibian
I'm number two, he's number one
I'm number one
You know life gone to the dogs when your boss is a frog
I can see it's just a matter of time before he gone
And I'm at the front of the line it won't be long until I get my chance
But in the mean time, I've got to dance monkey dance
Dance monkey dance now, watch me
I'm number one, he's number one, you're number two
I'm number two, I'll bet you kid, there you go, now step aside this segments through
I'm one, you're one, I'm number one
Yes, we know I'm
he's number one
That's how it's done
In the song "I'm Number One" by Ricky Gervais, the lyricist is exploring the idea of competition and the desire to be the best. The lyrics are a conversation between two individuals, one who sees themselves as the top dog and the other who is seen as second best. The repetition of “I’m number one, you’re number two" highlights the importance the song places on being the best. The lyrics suggest that the desire to be number one can lead individuals to engage in unethical behavior, with the line "We're criminals at large but I'm larger than you" hinting at a willingness to break the rules to stay on top.
The line "You're lucky to be number two not number three" reveals the cutthroat nature of the competition and emphasizes the importance of being better than others, even if it's just by one place. The line "I can see by the look in your eye, you want to get a bigger piece of the pie" suggests that the desire to be the best is universal, and the song encourages the idea of being a fierce competitor.
Overall, the song “I’m Number One” by Ricky Gervais takes a critical look at the desire to be the best and highlights the links between competition and unethical behaviour.

Seeing Ricky tonight in Brighton...he's my number one!

@Buddy It was outrageous. Many gasps from audience as he did his usual trip into uncharted comedy territory. He would make Jimmy Car blush! My only small complaint was that it was too short...about an hour and 15 mins and tickets were very expensive. Went to see Jimmy Carr too and he was on stage for over 2 hours.
